A short exposure - stop motion view of an American Goldfinch leaving its perch just as it’s hopped off a little branch. Although this is a rear view of our subject it’s still quite pretty, showing clean and subtlety graduated under plumage, and tiny open feet.

A Dark-Eyed Junco perches every feather in place, with an “chest out”, “chin up” posture in an Oak tree. He has a sanguine gleam in his eye and an overall proud but modest, one might almost say regal demeanour. Even the sun is trying its best to enhance his appearance by providing that most desirable over the shoulder 3/4 lighting.

A Northern Cardinal hides in a White Cedar tree. He seems to be peering at us through a gap in the greenery with one bright eye. The full mid winter afternoon sunlight gives the entire image a super saturated, contrasty palette, which I find quite attractive so I’ve published this one despite the subject being less than ideally sharp.

A Killdeer stands reflected in the lightly rippled water at the muddy river’s edge. It’s early June and the limey-green riverbank vegetation is as yet only tender shoots. The mild light gives shows how well our hero’s subtle grey-brown hued plumage matches the mud, and his beautiful red eye to advantage.
