just gonna throw out a quick reminder that in America police kill a yearly average of 3 civilians per day, routinely in situations very similar to these ICE killings, and decades of explicit support for police impunity by US politicians is why ICE feels theyre able to get away with this right now
Our government is murdering the citizens of this country. They are doing it without any checks on their violence

Something you almost certainly won’t see in the national news is how many tiny protests are all over the Twin Cities today.

They’re at stoplights. Parks. Bridges. Just everywhere. And people walking by are joining in. The solidarity is so deep.

It’s beautiful and brave. I love this city.

I’ll start.

Call your reps. Call five friends to talk about what happened—be in solidarity with each other and use that solidarity to start building something bigger. Attend an ICE Watch training. Combat disinformation by sharing the truth.

Get ready for them to tell you the man struggling on the floor and getting shot in cold blood gave the half dozen ICE agents that were beating him up internal bleeding. Fuck ICE.

VERY important for US university professors because the semester is starting!!!

If certain people come to your class asking for this information, you can send them away! (Ofc it is not guaranteed they will go away, but this is how it technically works.)

#HigherEd #LFK #KU #Jayhawks
Reminder to professors because I am seeing some baffling discussions. If classroom information is requested by authorities:

Records requests should go to your records dept, not you, the professor.

Subpoenas, judicial warrants should go to your legal dept, not you, the professor.

a reminder that I’m on the Reckoning team and if you send us a novella and if we decide to publish it there’s a chance I’ll be the one to edit it. an even higher chance if it’s queer, weird, and obsessed with birds, snails, moss, or other cool shit. no promises of course! but it could happen 👀👀👀
Our 10-year-old journal of creative writing on environmental justice will reopen to submissions, including poetry, creative nonfiction, art, short stories AND novella-length fiction, on February 1st.

The standards and expectations of what resistance, protest and daily life look like have shifted definitively towards mutual aid, community orientation and militant struggle for so many people in the US. Keep pushing, building and fighting. We are going to win 😘✌️

Overwhelmed? Action is a cure. Pick ONE survival fund, click "weekly"/"monthly," put it in your calendar to share once per day, put it in your email auto-reply, print a flyer—don't forget these families.

Here's one fund for six families & a camp: chuffed.org/project/hope...

Prison guards are flocking to ICE jobs and frankly this makes sense. Those of us who have been anti-prison organizers for decades have been saying that fascism already existed within prisons/jails. Our best teachers for how to survive fascism are incarcerated people.

When it collapses it will seem sudden, all at once. But if something doesn't change soon this regime is finished. Keep striking, keep fighting, keep pushing where you can, keep building resilience and mutual aid, keep caring for one another and building the world you want to live in.

It is very very dark right now. But hold on, dawn is coming. You see its light reflected in the eyes of tens of thousands across this country when they tumble out into the streets in below freezing weather for vigils and marches.

Remembering today that having your heart broken is a necessary step on the path to becoming fully human. Whichever heartbreak is your first, it’s probably critical that a state break your heart so that you can develop a political imagination. If this is your first, I’m sorry and also welcome.

The woman killed by ICE today was a poet. She won the 2020 Academy of American Poets, University & College Poetry Prize at Old Dominion University.

(And this is Renee from confirmed socials- a photo of a different woman with red lipstick is going around, but that was a classmate.)

Truly, not trying to be doomer. If anything I think that the hope that arises out of *determination* — the capacity to fight on despite all odds — comes not from painting a falsely reassuring picture of the past and present, but by cultivating qualities that allow us to rise up and fight on.
