Along an otherwise ordinary outdoor passageway, a single limestone block held a rich collection of fossil leaf impressions! I delighted in sharing it with a family passing by and watching the young girl quickly find as many leaves as I’d noticed. 4/4

A few paintings stopped me in my tracks — Courbet’s grotto vortex, the spectres in the Manet streetscape, and the unsettling quality of the Cezanne, where each of the vessels is painted from a slightly different point of view, almost like a preview of the Cubists’ overlapping viewpoints. 3/4
The Grotto of Sarrazine near Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne
About 1864
Gustave Courbet

From gallery card: “Courbet painted the grotto of Sarrazine, a popular tourist destination in his native region, numerous times in 1864. In this visually dramatic picture, he proposed radical new ideas about composition and technique. The cave fills the vortex-like composition, underscoring the mineral-rich, craggy, and moss-covered surfaces that engulf the viewer. Courbet used brushes and palette knives to create a laboriously constructed surface that evokes the variegated colors and textures of the rock strata. Staggering in its modernity, the painting verges on abstraction.” Rue Mosnier with Flags by Édouard Manet (whom I generally prefer to Monet)

From gallery card: “This painting depicts the rue Monier in Paris as Manet saw it from his studio window on June 30, 1878, a French national holiday. By contrasting the patriotic decorations on a prosperous avenue with a disabled veteran, the artist called attention to inequities in contemporary French society. The urban subject, bright colors, and bold, fluid brushwork reflect the influence of Manet's Impressionist counterparts.”

What struck me was the contrast between the disabled vet on the left, who is well defined, and the passersby on the right, who are almost spectral. Still Life with Apples
About 1893-94
Paul Cézanne

From gallery card: “This painting dates from Cézanne's mature, most influential phase, during which he sought to, as he said, "make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of the museums." The work's gridlike composition, tight integration of objects, and controlled brushwork convey a powerful sense of solidity. Three-dimensional forms, each rendered from different points of view, are bound together on the flat surface of the picture; an apple, for example, is captured by an arabesque escaping from the blue cloth.”

I’ve been in love with Barbara Hepworth’s work since I was a teenager. (I’ve visited her studio in Cornwall and the Pier Art Gallery in Orkney.) But I’d never seen one of my favorites, “Figure for a Landscape”, from these vantage points until today. 2/4

Spent the afternoon at The Getty Center in Los Angeles. As many times as I’ve been there, I still find art works that move me for the first time and viewpoints that I never noticed before. Hope you find something to enjoy among the images I captured. 1/4

Such heartbreaking news for lovers of the Irish language and landscape. I’m so glad to have met him during his Gaelic Tamagotchi tour. The word I was given to protect is “cáfall”, which means an easy-going dude. #speirgorm www.rte.ie/news/2025/10...

I am taking a peculiar joy in learning that there is such a thing as "puppytooth."

If you do patterned socks, keep the pattern discrete — pin dots, puppytooth, tonal check, etc. And choose a color that matches your pants: tan with tan, gray with gray, etc. Failing that, navy socks go with everything and look better than black socks.

This way, it's tasteful.

Finally, a judge who clearly delineates the current regime‘s unconstitutional assault on the First Amendment AND also is determined to find a remedy, not just issue an opinion. More of this, please.

Handwritten post card dated June 19, 2025 (On file in chambers): Trump has pardons and tanks…. What do you have?

Typewritten response: Dear Mr. Or Ms. Anonymous,

Alone, I have nothing but sense of duty.

Together, We the People of the United States — you and me — have our magnificent Constitution.

Here’s how that works out in a specific case —

I work with Veterans. If I told them that they "killed people and broke things for a living" they would (rightfully) tell me to go to hell.

Those that have had to kill someone in the line of duty most often view it with sadness, regret, and one of the worst experiences of their lives.

I did the Area 2 tour (highly recommended) several years ago, and it was clear that their intention was to grow not just food but replicable tech for urban ag. Will be interesting to see how their 2nd farm, a smaller one in Fairfax, turns out.

Nice profile at link. 2/2

Is the version in John Barth’s “Chimera” on your list? Little sister narrates, “This is the thousandth night I've sat at the foot of your bed while you and the King made love and you told him stories….” Haven’t thought about it in years, and I’m now 😭 because I can’t instantly find my copy.

Thank you, Governor, for the $400 check that I can now donate to an organization that actually supports my local #ArlingtonVA community since I can't depend on you to acknowledge the hurtful impact of fed layoffs, ICE raids, and the other chaos emanating from the WH.

ACOG: “Failing to treat medical conditions that warrant the use of acetaminophen [aka Tylenol], such as maternal fever, persistent headaches, and pain, can be dangerous.” www.acog.org/news/news-re...
From the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists:

Science is clear: There is no link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism in children.

High-quality studies confirm acetaminophen’s safety for use during pregnancy.

Pregnant patients can continue to rely on this trusted medicine for managing pain and fever.

But what about our local pro rugby team? @oldglorydc.bsky.social had a couple of seasons at Catholic U but has played the last few years at family-friendly venues in VA and MD that weren’t not so accessible by public transport.
“Regardless, by 2030, you’ll be able to watch just about any professional sport you want within city limits – and get to those respective stadiums and arenas using little more than public transit.”
