Given the productivity puzzle has now been a thing for decades, is anyone doing deep empirical work on it - e.g. ID'ing cohorts of high/low productivity firms in the UK and then digging into differences and drivers in their operations, ways of working, strategies etc. via proper observation?

This is a pretty classic way to test demand for a feature before you decide to build it… I’d say fair play doing this rather than shoehorning it in 🤷‍♂️

Very good stuff from Sadiq Khan at the Labour Irish society event. He said there are two reasons he loves coming to Labour Conference.

“One is the reception at the Labour Party Irish Society reception.

“The second is to get away from all the Sharia Law in London”

I know public sector digital work is hard, but the user experience of GP at Hand is just inexcusably bad. A tiny example (one of hundreds) - an email they sent me today: it tells me to click a link and it doesn’t include any link…

Where is the bundle of policy for hybrid work being here for the long term?
Town centres: incentivise retro-fit of empty property to co-working spaces
Transport: local micro-mobility, no peak fares, good wifi on trains
Education: teach distributed collab, hybrid internships
+..?

Yeh I think you're right. It's on the bonfire of "co-opted by the LinkedIn drones beyond any safe usage" at this point.

I’d always interpreted it (maybe generously) as a neo-Popperian thing: ‘strong’ means opinions that drive a lot of specific claims about reality, and the ‘loosely held’ is the commitment to falsifiability. But yeh, the two ways you knife it are probably the way lots of people are using it (badly)

Every time I hear about 'using synthetic data' or similar, I wonder the same... LLMs creating data to train other LLMs must get you into some weird territory?

Pitched a bunch of things like this to Sky almost a decade ago... they have almost certainly all been floating around in their 'innovation lab' or similar since then to no avail 🥲

The plastic analogy feels like a really strong one - incredible technology that *could* become very important in lots of places if employed with care... but becomes so cheap, common and over-applied across the whole economy that it damages the wider environment, obliterates prior craft skills...

Currently have Scottish inlaws visiting us down in Kent - they were absolutely baffled by not being able to go to the shops on Sunday evening. Seems to be going fine up there
