so busy with other work that i haven't seen as many festival films as i normally would but popped in for members' trivia last night. @filmlinc.bsky.social folks put on great events. (and also accidentally ended up at an A24 buyout at one of my local bars)

love NYFF season on the west side

coupled with the fact that, thanks to the commodifying arm of higher education, students are increasingly incentivized to be product and not process-oriented, making it more difficult than ever to impress upon them the value of substantive feedback

hard not to see ryder cup fans as a timely US metaphor— rich white dudes, emboldened by richer white dudes in power, making a spectacle of bad behavior. pro golf, like any global franchise, is impure all around but still easier to root for team EUR and rory to tell those douches to shut the fuck up

PTA's one battle after another has big "my partner is a Black woman" energy... multiple interpretations. sex + sexuality purposefully unsettle the audience, and harris describes some of the nuance here. ultimately agree that he makes a damn good (long, worth it) movie

'One Battle After Another' wants a revolution
Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Teyana Taylor star in Paul Thomas Anderson's action thriller about the unfulfilled promises of protest and rebellion.

thiiiis. i say this to my students all the time. aside from academic, ethical, environmental concerns (all relevant)— their brains are already better at most of the things they are trying to do with LLMs

People are interpreting this as snark or me calling McConaughey dumb but that was truly not my intention.

I think human minds are extraordinary, including his!

My dismay is with the way marketing is LLMs is leading people to doubt their own capacities in favor of something technological.

if you are not used to feeling this kind of fear, this is for you. if like elie m and many of us, this is not your first rodeo with the violent white right, this is for you. useful tips for these times

A white man killed another white man, but Black people are catching death threats.
So, instead of talking about white feelings again, I explored my own death threats, and tips for others who are unused to white America.

the exponential surge of anti-LGBTQ (and specifically anti-trans) bills introduced throughout the US are in and from conservative legislatures. and not in reaction to any parallel dem policies or to anything in particular... except for the audacity of trans people to exist

Awful and dangerous to hear the Mayor echo the transphobic bigotry coming from the Trump administration. It's completely at odds with the values of our city and another reason why his single, disgraced term in office cannot end soon enough.
A screenshot of two tweets from the Politico reporter Joe Anuta.

The 1st: ".@NYCMayor elaborates on his comments yesterday that boys and girls should not use the same bathroom. He says he will review the policy of his own education department, which allows students to use restrooms “consistent with their gender identity” and potentially change it"

2nd: "He says students whose sex at birth differs should never be allowed to use the bathroom at the same time, regardless of gender identity"

with many of my neighbors and local orgs, we've been fighting this hard. reassuring that our local electeds listened (not mayor and gov, of course). if you haven't seen firsthand, it's wild how much money has been poured into celeb endorsements, bot campaigns, courting small biz owners, bribes, etc

i say this all the time. why is this so difficult to understand? swing voters are not policy-driven voters because if they were they wouldn't be "swing"

still thinking about the history of sound— a beauty that you should see if you can. in an era of excess, everything about this film from the music to the pacing to the acting (especially paul mescal) is graceful restraint

the thing I love about Zohran’s campaign is that instead of “this place fucking sucks and I alone can fix it” his message is “being a New Yorker rules, we live in the best city in the world, let’s make it even better together”

show some damn pride in the places you want to govern
