I'm going to try to keep a thread of all the comics I read in 2025, we'll see how it goes.

Starting off the year with a reread of Stages of Rot. This is the gold standard for me, full of forgotten little details to rediscover every time I read it.

Apparently it means generic "horror" comics from established with no nudity or politics allowed 😴
powercosmic.bsky.social
I’m curious which ones you’re interested in (even the ones from artists I like aren’t grabbing me)

Multiple zombie books for a zombie imprint

I knew the Vertigo relaunch was going to play things safe but its pretty boring that every single creative team is an established writer/artist duo that has worked together on a successful book together in the past.

Its more that they need him to debut with the S logo because its iconic and the costume looks bad without it, but also don't want him naming himself Superman, so there needs to be some alternate reason why he has that logo.
powercosmic.bsky.social
It’s stupid and embarrassing to have the symbol mean “hope” though 🙄
powercosmic.bsky.social
The benefit of having it be a kryptonian symbol is they can have Superman debut already wearing the S and then have Lois assign him the name Superman so he doesn’t seem like an egomaniac for calling himself that.

There are a TON of variant cover guys clearly heavily reliant on AI now, it’s endemic. Panosian is just the only one I know by name.

“Clanker” is ironically too humanizing. Even the evil droids in Star Wars are your lovable buddies.
powercosmic.bsky.social
My hot take on the “slurs against AI” discourse is that we should have gone with “toaster” from Battlestar Galactica instead of “clanker” from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. More rhetorically effective. “That was written by a toaster. You’re letting a toaster make decisions for you” etc.

There should be way more comics about adults doing adult things. Most people are adults.

Anyone have a particularly hot comic take?

I can’t remember the exact details but I think the joint trademark was somehow the result of a weird ruling by a judge who didn’t have any experience with IP law. There was no precedent for it, and the term is clearly genericized. Don’t think either company ever successfully enforced it.
powercosmic.bsky.social
It’s for the best, that joint trademark was always legally suspect

When I was a boy scout we joked constantly about the stalking merit badge, so many missed joke opportunities because we didn’t know about the “nut culture” merit badge

List of discontinued merit badges (Boy Scouts of America)
"discontinued merit badges (boy scouts of America)" wikipedia page shows "nut culture", 1928-1954 stalker merit badge 1910-1922, stalking merit badge 1911-1952 invention merit badge 1911-1917. only 10 scouts achieved it, required that they obtained a federal patent

i actually prefer it when the mods actively hate the user base and vice versa, that’s how every great message board worked for years and i think we should give it a whirl

"All the Effort You Are Making Will Ultimately Pay Off" by Peony Gent. All year I've been craving abstract comics and comics about nature. Obviously Gent's diary comics are the former, and I was pleasantly surprised that this is the latter as well.

I bought like 40+ comics in the 2023 one and only read like half of them so now I really limit how many I let myself choose. (9 only this year)
powercosmic.bsky.social
If *I* was the mods I wouldn’t be antagonizing the core user base by trying to brute force a popular breakfast food into a symbol of opposition to human rights, but I guess that’s why I’m only a humble poster 😔
powercosmic.bsky.social
It’s not a real web forum if we don’t all hate the mods. It’s tradition.
