Thought it would be hard to top Steam's behavior around Horses, but EGS and Humble have them beat. The whole "oh we'll cooperate but pull your shit at the last minute" is a huge business risk. Prepping marketing materials is money. Building for a platform is money. Pulling out wastes that money.

Back with more old Splatter dev posts. Many of the clips in my folder are showing off weapons, like this one showcasing FUCK. We had a pretty large weapon roster on Splatter: the weapons were just finger guns, so animating new ones was very quick and let us slip in a bunch of weird designs.

I know the one of the devs personally so I can't leave an unbiased review or anything but it's a shooter where your fingers shoot da bullets and your ammo is estrogen and testosterone. And it looks like this, shouldn't be hard to figure out if you want to play it or not.

here's a fun one. the fog in that bottomless pit is a shader i got from a tutorial in 2018ish. it's been in every game rat king / catbird has released, because it turns out being able to fade-to-black bits of a level we don't want you to see is really useful!

Here's the oldest clip I have of Splatter proper. This is Session 1 before we had figured anything out about our environments, lighting, UI, etc. We did have the core elements locked in very early, though - IIRC our boys were bleeding rainbows within 2 weeks of the project starting.

When you're making something new/experimental, there's some incentive to handhold players through it because you can't expect semi-committed people to stick with your game if they misunderstand what you're trying to do. but Metroid Prime 4 is not that. it is literally the fourth one they've made.

what's interesting about this handholding stuff is that AAA games actually have the MOST affordance to cut those features. People will buy the new Metroid and try to push through it because it's a fucking Metroid game and they want to be Samus. They won't drop it the second something confuses them.
