Some quotes from Dvergatal (Catalogue of Dwarfs), which listed the names of dwarfs in Völuspá, a poem in Poetic Edda, although this part is now often set aside from newer editions. Tolkien adopted some names for Gandalf and the Dwarves in Thorin's company.

Cat reliefs "Tisya" and "Pusya" on Borobudur Temple and a relief of a cat with prayer beads on Mendut Temple (both in Central Java) share the theme of deception in their roles; similar to Tevildo, a fay-cat and the early version of Sauron. 🧵1/3

The "hermit cat" relief on Mendut Temple was from ancient animal fables called "Panchatantra". It depicts a cat who disguised itself as a monk to capture mice. You can say that the prayer beads were the source of the cat's deceptive power, like Tevildo's magical golden collar here. 3/3

Tisya and Pusya were cats used in a deception by evil ministers in "The Tale of Rudrayana" reliefs. These ministers tricked Rudrayana's son, an oppressive king called Sikhandin, to prevent the return of his wise father, besmirch the names of Buddhist saints, and keep their positions. 2/3

Took me 2 months to finish the Indonesian version of "A Political Biography of the Indonesian Lesbian, Bisexual, and Trans Movement." It opens with queer elements in cultural aspects before tracing the movement/visibility from colonial era to post-independence, New Order regime, and after. #Booksky

We are not performative enough, honestly! How's the book? Which part is the most eye-opening/fascinating for you?

You already had it! Oh yeah, I enjoy insights from Dandhy's series and I know it's going to be good! Love any books that make parcok parno enough 😈

Please do, the amount of research that went into this is remarkable! (I only read this in the morning/afternoon with my notebook and coffee though, haha).

The seed of this book was Prof. Saskia E. Wieringa's effort to combat the notion that queer history and related studies only exist in Western countries. Indonesian independent publisher and collective Komunitas Bambu did the translation project to make Indonesian queer history more accessible.

The postcards are donation souvenirs from Queer Indonesia Archive collective. I love that the postcards and the book cover were inspired by Javanese "wayang orang" performance. I grew up watching it and I always see it as having certain fluidity that lends to queer interpretation.

Here's an interesting mention about the book that might inspire Tolkien's Goblin cave drawing and alphabet. www.tolkienguide.com/modules/newb...

The Goblin cave drawings and alphabet that Tolkien created in 1932 for his Father Christmas's letter for his children, likely inspired by a prehistoric culture book he had. Both were drawn when he was working on "The Hobbit" and some creatures from that manuscript bled to his letters.

My sister brought me books from her work trip to India. I was intrigued by the bag. Bahrisons Booksellers was established in 1953 by Balraj Bahri Malhotra, a refugee of the 1947 Partition of India. This has been a family-run bookstore ever since. Knowing the history made the gifts special. #Booksky

Kabasaran, a dance of Minahasa, North Sulawesi, roots in an ancestral war dance where warriors danced around a human head and sang as a symbol of courage.

While it was no longer a case, the dance style stays the same: loud, boastful, and aggressive, mimicking roosters in a cockfight.
