Hope you had a great time in Oxford, @dannybate.bsky.social! We'll need to finally meet up btw (either Prague or Brno!)

@piratskastrana.bsky.social

My warmest congratulations, sir! Cheers to the Bates!

So what Fingolfin would do, essentially...

What a shame, hope you get better soon, we were looking forward to having you here!

Today at #AMLaP2025: In 🇨🇿, sentential negation causes both NPI and NCI (negative concord) illusions, contrary to the predictions of active scope and scalar theories. This is me saying my money is on feature percolation. Check out the poster here: www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Melvyn Bragg has been one of the last standard-bearers for a really important, and unfashionable, idea: that good conversation, between people who really know their stuff, on complex or difficult subjects, can be fantastic radio - and that the national broadcaster should do this.

I hope it endures.

Melvyn Bragg has decided to stand down as host of In Our Time, the BBC says.

Very excited to teach my first semester as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Czech Language 🇨🇿 at @masarykuniversity.bsky.social! Taking over Intro to Ling is a big responsibility, but I hope to inspire at least a few to start thinking about language scientifically 🧪

Reviewing for for-profit publishers should be paid at least, it could also serve as a good income source for junior researchers!

Yup, it's a sick system! Not only that, Gold OA creates its very own perverse incentives for publishers as brilliantly argued here: bsky.app/profile/psma...

As grant money starts drying up, it's more important than ever not to waste it on paying publishers' open access "article processing fees" when we can host PDFs for free. Tom Morgan and I wrote a paper on this, forthcoming at Science and Public Policy. Accepted draft here: osf.io/preprints/os...

In 🇨🇿, OA is very much preferred and sometimes mandated by funders, however, in combination with the WoS/Scopus and IF requirements, this almost always leads to publishing in the Gold OA mode, which in the end, is just funnelling tax payer money into the pockets of Elsevier & Co.

Great news, but it can be difficult for some researchers to support these given the science evaluation criteria of their country. In 🇨🇿, nothing counts unless it's in WoS or Scopus. I want to publish in @glossapsycholx.bsky.social for instance, but I would be loosing my Department funding if I did.

Let’s give STAR all the support we can. Let’s move away from a subscription based to a diamond open access science—free, independent science.

Journals backed by research institutions must lead the way—and so are they doing.

STAR's first issue is out! (STAR is an open-access journal publishing syntactic research from the same editorial team that brought us Syntax) #Linguistics

I wrote about these 'illusion illusions' previously here:

Špatné zkušenosti s ním jako prorektorem?

It took some trying, but I got an illusion illusion with the comparative "More people have been to Russia than I have" illusions. Interestingly though, it's quite good with other types of linguistic illusions.

V UK se například běžně píší eseje nejenom v hodinách angličtiny, ale zejména pak v dalších humanitních i přírodovědných předmětech - v dějepisu, zeměpisu, biologii a tak dále.

Very cool, already sent it to my neurologist friend interested in language impairments!

I have to say it's really frustrating to read, because it's that faceless corporate lingo that they use in their emails to give the veneer of caring about you while not actually giving a single hoot!
