2014 - Farage then said he may have made comments that he did not know were racist at the time. "You can define namecalling in all sorts of different ways", he said. Asked if he had used a racist term to confront a fellow boy, he said "I don't know, I don't remember. It's not relevant, is it?"

BBC World at One reporting on our investigation into Farage's schooldays, with one of the contemporaries who has spoken to us, Andy Field, speaking on the programme. It also features an excerpt from a 2014 interview with Farage on BBC Kent, which is a new bit for the timeline of his positions.

Was an excellent interview! Highly recommend ppl listen. Recalled that #Farage was ‘very strange’, a ‘loner type’, ‘bit of a pariah because of his extreme racist views’, ‘celebrated his initials being NF’, ‘a nasty piece of work’ and a ‘complete liar’ who used to goose step around the playground 😖

All the supposedly progressive people saying 'Nigel Farage's racism doesn't matter. His fans love it'.

It matters whether the leader of the party leading all the opinion polls is an outright racist. It matters if he called black people 'wogs' and said 'gas them' to Jews. Not everything is a game

Nick Robinson and Michael Crick on BBC R4 Today blithely absolving Farage of racism just because Nigel learnt to stop hissing death camp gas sounds into his targets’ ears (and instead started doing his racism in political code) is giving me indigestion at 9am.

There's a large bang of "We are right-on white saviours for you people, how dare you criticise us, know your place" about the whole shameful affair.

Not sure you need a 6 or 7 part podcast to ascertain that.

The endless handwringing about it is tedious.

Astute summary.
There is no mystery here.

Social media gave a voice to people of colour to criticise white people's descriptions of them in literature, and the establishment tried to bully the critics into silence, and make them sorry for speaking up, so they can continue to write what they damn well like.

It shows that the criticial Goodreads review had gone largely unnoticed, that many couldn't stomach the book privately, but didn't feel able to speak up (how right they were), until Clanchy poured petrol on the review, set it alight for everyone to see, and then blamed everyone else for the fire.

I listened to the first 3 episodes of BBC's "Anatomy of a Cancellation," and I don't know how the interviewer didn't laugh at Kate Clanchy when she said that "slanty eyes" wasn't in her book, it was "slantED, sparking, black eyes," so that was okay.
The podcast completely vindicates the criticisms.

Now it’s called ’cancel culture’ and it’s everybody else’s fault, just never your own.
We used to call it a PR disaster and the onus was very much on them.

Great piece, so true.

‘The true definition of cancellation would be to disappear, left to exist only as an image in people’s minds. But that doesn’t often happen. TV interviews, podcasts, profiles and editorials can follow: “I Was Cancelled” or “Cancel Culture Ruined My Life”’.

Sickening rhetoric by Home Secretary. Denying access to human rights isn't "protecting the public". This is Labour further demonising those seeking asylum in language very reminiscent of the far right. Yes, some break the law, so should be prosecuted within the law. Removing rights is not the answer
