But we are almost 600 million people, have the army most experienced in fighting Russia (Ukraine), advanced technology and two nuclear powers.

So what does "understand" mean when applied to an LLM, or a chess program? It certainly doesn't mean it has a rich inner life, social context, endocrine system, etc etc.
If it means anything at all, it's a much narrower definition: It can manipulate symbols to produce a valid result. /1
