Congratulations to Andra and Stephanie, master’s students in the lab, whose manuscript has been accepted for publication in Nature NPJ Viruses.

Their study reports the multiomic characterization of the largest bacteriophage maintained in culture.

Glad Science retracted the Arsenic life paper.

Brilliant work by Rosie Redfield and others showed this study had issues 15 years ago.

Lots of secondary metabolite clusters, a plasmid that appears to be lost or transferred, weird ANI boundaries, something for everyone!

We were also lucky that our neighbors in the @raw937.bsky.social lab looked for prophage in these endosymbionts. Did not think they would be there but they are!

New from the Carter Lab!

Led by @bhuwanabbot.bsky.social, we sequenced almost twice as many complete genomes as were available for the endofungal Mycetohabitans genus.

Unsurprisingly, they are a little weird, giving us insight into endosymbiotic genome changes 🧬 🦠
