Thomas doesn't have super-high confidence in himself but it's not low, either. Lad coasts through with 'eh, I'm alright' and had a fairly accurate sense of his own skills.
That said, the BG3 party did throw him for a loop for a while because he KNEW he was rather ordinary compared to most of camp.
