Manifesting goals for 2026. I got to do some of the things I wanted this year. Let's keep that momentum going. Next year I will:
- Write for RogerEbert.com
- Serve in a FIPRESCI jury
- Write a new comic book
- Write for a new game project
Here's to new opportunities and friends in 2026.
Substack has chosen a side. Do not contribute to it.

A wonderful debut from Stewart who has repeatedly proven herself an interesting and always surprising artist. It's devastating to watch, but so full of defiance and life that it will leave you feeling whole again by the end.

All of this!
Democratizing the arts looks like universal income, low-barrier grants for both emerging and working artists, well-funded municipal arts & recreation programs, vibrant third spaces, and a well-funded public school system with progressive curriculum.

Not a free pass for corporate-owned slop engines.
Every instance of "AI democratizes the arts, you're classist and ableist and a gatekeeper for trying to stop it" is a slap in the face to the literally centuries of poor, disabled people making art on the margins and a crass lie in service of a machine that strips down and regurgitates dreams

Every couple of months or so the traffic on my site crawls to a halt for no particular reason. I then spend days fixing whatever issue Google has this time and it returns to somewhat normal. Immensely frustrating. I wish we could just go back to Livejournal with followers. That was easier.

One of the most stunning films of the decade so far. Everyone I've dragged to see it has come away mesmerized.
Óliver Laxe’s Sirât, a Metacritic Must-See, is now in select theaters.

I checked out seven films from the DocPoint 2026 roster, including greats like Seeds, Blame, and Ghost Elephants. Here's 3000 words on the ones I think you should see, and one you really should skip. #documentary #filmsky

Every day feels like Mamdani shows up and goes: "Guys, we've decided to *not* build the Torment Nexus and instead dismantle the one they previously constructed!" Only for the current leaders to look around in shock like: "Is that legal?"
Child at the podium: “A woo woo woo.”

Mamdani: That’s how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our city—and what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.

The first Greenland movie was unintentionally one of the funniest released that year. The second one is nowhere near that questionable quality. It's mostly just a tiresome slog. #filmsky regionfree.net/greenland-2-...
Greenland 2: Migration - The worst family in film is back!
★ | Lacking the unintentional hilarity of its predecessor, Greenland 2 is a dull and lifeless apocalypse slog without any thrills.

Since the start of January, I've published 3 interviews and over 20 film, streaming show, and game reviews in English and Finnish. This year I will have more variety in coverage than ever, and every bit of support helps keep the site independent and free for all. ko-fi.com/joonatanitko...

“Making films is a political act,” says actor-director Kristen Stewart. “You have to decide how you want to wield your presence and your voice.”

Love her.

Sounds like the perfect time to ditch Instagram. It's not enough for them to have people generate free content, now they want you to pay for your own work.
I just got this notification from this trial Meta is conducting. For art to be seen, fees are required. No more likes because your work is interesting to ppl, it is all just paid access to huge audiences. And these are just starting fees, they go up after a month. 👎😬😭

I raved about Nioh 3 for KonsoliFIN. While the previous two chapters didn't spark joy, I was completely enamored by Team Ninja's latest epic. For fans of the soulslike-genre, it's a blast. #gaming #nioh3

Years ago there was a very early meme about Lord of the Rings written as diary entries from each member of the Fellowship. To this day, I use "stupid ring, stupid quest, stupid fellowship" at least once a week. I hope whoever wrote the original knows how much joy they've brought into this world.

I had the biggest crush on Catherine O'Hara growing up. She was hysterically funny and I always believed every part she played. She knew how to listen and adapt like few others do. I'm sad to think we will never have more surprising and fun performances from her.

While the Switch 2 edition isn't exactly a massive upgrade, it is enough to warrant a return to Animal Crossing's charming world. This is still a hugely addictive and fun game that serves as a great escape from reality in trying times. #gaming #nintendo regionfree.net/animal-cross...

I can't say that I truly enjoyed my time with Cairn, but I still think everyone should play it anyway. It is beautiful and full of deeply emotional moments you won't find anywhere else. Even if they go hand in hand with some annoying gameplay mechanics. #gaming regionfree.net/cairn-game-r...
Review: Cairn is an artistic masterpiece but less fun to play
★★★ | Atmospheric and beautiful, Cairn is a gorgeous and emotional experience worth playing with some major reservations.

The Boss, as ever, puts everything beautifully and with heartbreaking fury into focus.
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Gore Verbinski is back with an audacious, messy, and always entertaining sci-fi spectacle about the darkest timeline we live in. Sam Rockwell is tremendous as the unhinged potential savior of the world. It isn't perfect, but it is perfectly timed. #filmsky regionfree.net/good-luck-ha...
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is the perfect film for our time
