In the latest Government-backed auction for vital new clean power projects (AR7), the UK has secured a record amount of new offshore wind capacity of 8.4 GW⚡ 💪
Earlier this week the Government launched the Warm Homes Plan, which will deliver £15 billion of public investment via upgrades to up to 5 million homes, potentially saving bill papers hundreds on energy bills & lift as many as a million families out of fuel poverty by 2030

Today's AR7 secured a record 8.4GW of offshore wind capacity at a strike price of around £91/MWh (2024 prices)

🏭 gas: over £100/MWhr

☢️ nuclear: around £128/MWhr

🌬️ wind: around £86/MWhr (below £94/MWhr they save money off bills, above are cost-neutral for billpayers)

Annual clean power auctions, known as Allocation Rounds, are the primary way the Government unlocks investment in new offshore & onshore wind, solar & tidal energy projects. Successful projects are awarded Contracts for Difference (CfDs) to generate clean power

UK's first offshore wind farm marks milestone

The first turbines were erected at the site in Blyth, Northumberland, in December 2000, with the sector having since become the second largest power source in the country after gas.

In the time since Shrek one came out at the cinema and Independent Women by Destiny's Child was number one, the UK's offshore wind industry has grown to become the biggest source of clean power, providing over 34% of all renewable electricity in 2024,
