@retiredmascots.bsky.social
An obituary for characters that put some fun into consumerism, at least before they had to go away or became lost to obscurity. Often for the best. | Posts one mascot a day, reposts own posts regularly | DM for requests | run by @maxisherealso.bsky.social
Pinned
When Bluesky restored my hacked accounts, they did not lift the restriction on posting videos. The support team took two weeks to get my response telling them what happened, and now I have to wait until they read the further info I gave them. So no new (or old) videos here for a long while, I guess.

Decided to take the next couple of weeks off so please remind me of any discontinued brand characters I'm missing!
I admittedly haven't given myself enough time lately to keep up with this account, and I'm lacking motivation in researching mascots. Please request me any mascots you remember!

Choco the Bear
Kellogg's Chocos
1991-2020

The face of Kellogg's internationally sold cereal was most commonly seen causing mayhem with the cereal's crunch or racing his unnamed young friend to the cereal. He was replaced by his friend, Coco Monkey, when the cereal rebranded as a Coco Pops spin-off.

Jeeves
Ask Jeeves
1996-2016

Before chatbots were emitting CO2 to give you answers, Jeeves - named after P. G. Wodehouse's fictional valet - attracted users to the all-purpose, reliable answer engine Ask Jeeves, later known as Ask. He enjoyed a second life in the UK from 2009, redesigning him in 3D.

In 1993, McDonald’s Australia offered a Mac Tonight Happy Meal… three full years after he disappeared from ads in the US. That mask has to be one of the “best worst” toys ever made.

Freebees
Vodafone
2011-2013

The ads, voiced over by Idris Elba, depicted a world populated by anthropomorphic bees. They would casually discuss the benefits of Freebee rewards while running into everyday problems usually associated with bees, like walking into windows or getting stuck to wet paint.

Maybe it's because I grew up in the 90s, but I love weird little mascot guys like this. I feel like we don't have them as often anymore. C'mon capitalism, if you're gonna force ads on me, at least make them cute and weird

Vinnie
2008-2017
Fox's Biscuits

Part panda, part dog, part Italo-New Jersey mobster - a "danda" - Vinnie was a connoisseur of the finer things, ensuring that everyone recognised his favourite "biscwits" as a thing of luxury. He auctioned off his belongings on eBay to make amends for his shady past.

Derek
Weetos
1987-1988

Weetabix's chocolate hoops were introduced with a West Midlands skateboarder named Derek. His exuberantly animated ads saw him escaping his square reality by enjoying the cereal not just for breakfast, but as the wheels on a bike, a tennis racket or the cymbals in a drum kit.

Martians
Smash
1973-2015

Created by John Webster, voiced by Peter Hawkins, these metal Martians made British cultural history mocking earthlings mashing potatoes the old, arduous way - and puppeteers fooling around on set were to thank. They briefly returned on TV in 1992, and on packaging in 2004.

Carnation
1965

Pat Harrington Jr. and Lennie Weinrib voiced and Bill Melendez directed this comic rabbit duo in a series of 8-second spots where they gave each other tastes of Carnation dairy, but the products would often inflict exaggerated side effects on them. "Thanks a lot, Harry!"
