Went out and saw my friends in the water today. Once again, they were all too small to make it up to shore. But for the first day with a western fly rod, I was just happy to get interest (and a ton of info from the host here).

He keeps bringing it up which makes me think he's been confronted with a fairly serious diagnosis. Whatever it is, I enjoy hearing him repeatedly bring up his mortality.

Catching that last fish felt like a bit of vindication that I am learning where to find trout. I had tried this spot a while back and nothing. But I kept running through that deep channel and got one today.

Fairly sure this one is a rainbow. I assumed cutthroat at the time, but the mouth and color looks more like a rainbow. This river has a steelhead population, and this is much lower than the cutties. It also took the fly and fought very differently.

Both of these cutthroat were caught on the backside of that fern covered boulder. It was a bitch to cast here and when landing the first one, I wrapped up in the tree on the right.

The other pool was on a tributary. Tons of fry in there.

Wild how everyone around here is getting sick, everyone who goes to the hospital tests positive for COVID, everyone has classic COVID symptoms, and all of them say "I don't have COVID, it's just a cold or the flu."

My blood pressure is way, way down. It's helped me be so much more active this summer. Just about any free time I'm fishing, wading, bluelining, hiking, or otherwise exploring the outdoors.

Nice. I started in May, still on 5 mg, and down just shy of 50 pounds. The last month of COVID, recovering from COVID, a sinus infection, had me kind of in a holding pattern, but now that I'm better, the appetite suppression is back.

Boy is it getting cold up there... Water was in the upper 50s-60. Air was 50. Snow may be in the forecast this weekend. This was probably the last sure bet to get up there.

I didn't catch anything and broke a brand new rod. But my goodness is it nice to get these reminders of how beautiful our public lands are.

These are three separate lakes on a trail just below 6K feet near the intersection or Umpqua, Willamette, and Deschutes national forests.
