"I’m worried Dad will only remember that humans suck" by Lucy Zhang. @dango-ramen.bsky.social

From the 2023 issue of RHINO.

What poems are you reading as we round out AAPI Heritage Month?
Poem text.

The first time I saw Buddha’s hand, I shrieked & stood behind my dad as he cut off therind, snapped one of the thin fingers off. He handed it to me. I shook my head, wary about eating fruit appendages that look like they’re in prayer. Surely biting one was badluck, a harbinger of death & despair. Dad insisted it was good for me because it had abitter white pith. Everyone knew anything bitter was the cure to all illness. But Icontinued to shake my head. He was never one to force me to act against my will. No,he was much sneakier about it. He’d tell me about how swarms of locusts crossed theocean, replenishing energy by devouring each other while in flight, how I’d gape & askwhy locusts were so cruel, he’d say all animals are like that, even humans. Suddenlyeating the finger of Buddha’s hand didn’t seem like such a big deal. Doubt humanitybefore believing in it, he’d lecture. Dad doesn’t remember things too well anymore, stillthinks I’m twelve even though I pay a mortgage, file taxes, suffer back cramps. I liveclose to work & stay late because they provide free food after 7 pm (“working latedinner program”) & walk back home along a path lit by traffic lights & neglectedlampposts. Dad always insisted I be on the phone with him if I was walking alone, but hehas stopped picking up the calls because middle school ended at three pm so he thinksI’m already home, tucked in, with a cup of suan nai on my bed stand to help my growingbones. Instead, I walk home in silence, trying to stay alert even as my mind drifts towardthe locusts who once blocked out the sun for five days, then went extinct.
