Doug passed away yesterday. A fellow gardener for the past 18 years. We exchanged garden tips, talked about our produce and Bills football, laughed a bit, got angry together about the state of the States and became friends. God, I miss Doug. Puts a lump in my throat about the upcoming season.

Went to my local library this morning to do a bit of research for my current book project and my goodness such a life-affirming space! There was an adult being taught to read on the next table, children enjoying story time, countless people taking out books. So grateful for our libraries ❤️

My cousin James visited this past week. We drank some beers, saw some live music, and ate many good meals together, but we mainly just hung out…reminiscing and laughing a lot. James is my brother from a different mother…he hopped on the peace train with me in ‘71 and we’re still riding it together.

I read The Dead by James Joyce today. Great short story about living. First read it as a 23-year-old. I thought ‘Enjoy life and love in the moment.’ As a 66-year-old, I thought ‘’Enjoy life and love in the moment and don’t deceive the people in the present about your past.’ Thank you, James Joyce.

Sometimes the soul needs in the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, Karma Chameleon by Culture Club, and a whole album by Men At Work… I said, “Do you speak-a my language?” He just smiled and gave me a Vegamite sandwich. He said, “ I come from a land down under.” At least my soul needs that periodically.

“Look out ‘cause here comes some free advice, walk in the sunshine, watch for the bright sun, be all those things you’re able to be…Try not to hurry, it just not your worry. Leave it to those all caught up in time. You got to deep-six your wrist watch…” Bob Weir

I read two books in a week for the first time in a while. Tattoo by Manuel Vazquez Montalban and The Dying Animal by Phillip Roth. I know they are short novels, but both novels had a fair amount of sex which helped my focus. I’ve already read all of Anais Nin so I checked out two more by Montalban.

A few years back it was the chase scene in Baby Driver to the beat of Hocus Pocus by Focus. Today it was during Marty Supreme, the Korgis, Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometimes…Change your heart, it will astound you…and I was in a dream. In the middle of a film, I was in Europe with my thumb out. ‘81.

When Brett visits, I put on R.E.M. When Gary visits, Steely Dan. Ron, Jorma Kaukonen, my brother, Traffic. Keith, CCR. Danny, the Stranglers. Steve, Bob Dylan. James, Oingo Boingo (to his dismay). Eric, David Bowie. Manuel, the Waterboys. I associate music with all my favorite guys in this world.

This past year I reconnected with the guys from College Notre Dame de Tournai who I got to know almost 50 years ago in Belgium. Pierre sent me a new year’s song which had me in tears of happiness. Beautiful! ‘Je te souhaite un bonne annee, remplie d’amour, remplie de reves…’ A bunch of good ‘amis’.

Lots of sweet memories of being a dad, but the one I thought of today on the elliptical was reading children’s books with my girls…nestled together in the big blue recliner. I often think the message of each book is as much for the adult as for the child. Be kind…be loving…be thankful…be present.

Our road trip to Vermont for Christmas was a dodgeball game of missing Winter storms. We were continually a day ahead or a day behind an ice or snow storm so our roads were always cleared. We just put on some Tame Impala and from our car, enjoyed the Winter Wonderland. Sometimes you’re just lucky.

At a wedding tonight of a Jewish family from Boston and a Chinese-American family from Boston. Sophia + Eric. The whole party dancing like it’s 2028. America, baby. America, baby. Excuse me, but I don’t want to miss this dance. America, baby. America!

Listening to Morphine tonight, grooving on ‘You Speak my Language’. And I was singing to my dogs. Yes, that’s where my head is on a night I read that the State Department is makes a DEI case for changing fonts. WTF? And that’s the least crazy thing I read.

I ate some amazing food on Koh Samed in Thailand. The best hamburger I’ve eaten was in Winfield, KS. The best Fried Shrimp Po’Boy—Verti Marte in the French Quarter. The best Gyro- Latin Quarter, Paris. The best ribs…my backyard. I’ve had great food everywhere, but some foods have special memories.

At 18, I never knew I would go through so many vacuum cleaners, cars, grills, lawn mowers and refrigerators. At 30, I never knew I bought my first and only shovel, hoe and post hole digger. At 39, I’d sold and bought a house. At 51, I thought a bit about What/Ifs. At 66, I think about downsizing.

Things I’m thankful for…clean drinking water, dogs, legs, fingers and toes, world music, farmers, nice people, public transportation, George Washington Carver, Henry David Thoreau, oranges, my family and friends, house plants from friends, paintings by friends, beer with friends, chocolate, etc.

I’ve waded into the Poudre with my daughters. I’ve floated the Gasconade in all seasons with Carolyn. I’ve sat along the Walnut River and Asher Creek and watched the colors. I’ve seen the floods of the Mississippi and the Missouri. All flowing to New Orleans and then the Sea. I’ve been ‘rivered’.
