This past year I reconnected with the guys from College Notre Dame de Tournai who I got to know almost 50 years ago in Belgium. Pierre sent me a new year’s song which had me in tears of happiness. Beautiful! ‘Je te souhaite un bonne annee, remplie d’amour, remplie de reves…’ A bunch of good ‘amis’.

Lots of sweet memories of being a dad, but the one I thought of today on the elliptical was reading children’s books with my girls…nestled together in the big blue recliner. I often think the message of each book is as much for the adult as for the child. Be kind…be loving…be thankful…be present.

Our road trip to Vermont for Christmas was a dodgeball game of missing Winter storms. We were continually a day ahead or a day behind an ice or snow storm so our roads were always cleared. We just put on some Tame Impala and from our car, enjoyed the Winter Wonderland. Sometimes you’re just lucky.

At a wedding tonight of a Jewish family from Boston and a Chinese-American family from Boston. Sophia + Eric. The whole party dancing like it’s 2028. America, baby. America, baby. Excuse me, but I don’t want to miss this dance. America, baby. America!

Listening to Morphine tonight, grooving on ‘You Speak my Language’. And I was singing to my dogs. Yes, that’s where my head is on a night I read that the State Department is makes a DEI case for changing fonts. WTF? And that’s the least crazy thing I read.

I ate some amazing food on Koh Samed in Thailand. The best hamburger I’ve eaten was in Winfield, KS. The best Fried Shrimp Po’Boy—Verti Marte in the French Quarter. The best Gyro- Latin Quarter, Paris. The best ribs…my backyard. I’ve had great food everywhere, but some foods have special memories.

At 18, I never knew I would go through so many vacuum cleaners, cars, grills, lawn mowers and refrigerators. At 30, I never knew I bought my first and only shovel, hoe and post hole digger. At 39, I’d sold and bought a house. At 51, I thought a bit about What/Ifs. At 66, I think about downsizing.

Things I’m thankful for…clean drinking water, dogs, legs, fingers and toes, world music, farmers, nice people, public transportation, George Washington Carver, Henry David Thoreau, oranges, my family and friends, house plants from friends, paintings by friends, beer with friends, chocolate, etc.

I’ve waded into the Poudre with my daughters. I’ve floated the Gasconade in all seasons with Carolyn. I’ve sat along the Walnut River and Asher Creek and watched the colors. I’ve seen the floods of the Mississippi and the Missouri. All flowing to New Orleans and then the Sea. I’ve been ‘rivered’.

I’m looking forward to the day when Orange is the New Presidential Suit….as well as Orange is the New VP Suit…as well as Orange is the New Congressional Republican Outfit…as well as Orange is the New Bought and Sold Supreme Court Justice Robe. The illegality of these US traitors is dumbfounding!

Olive oil, butter or sour cream makes every cuisine amazing. Maybe not on your cardiologist’s recommendations, but hey, you only go around once.

I’m working so hard…working for the company. I bought a bottle of Basil Hayden. And a Pub Pass. To keep you in the luxury. I got a 2018 Mazda 3 and two tickets to Mazatlan. I’m working so hard to keep you in the luxury. I picked up four bottles of European wine…laughing with my honey about luxury.

I’m amazed that my body has functioned, will function and is still functioning so well…scratching my dog under his neck, smelling the coffee brewing, hearing the birds chirping in the early morning, tasting my daily orange with a cup of coffee and seeing the sun rise. I never cease to be amazed.

Various jobs I’ve romanticized in my life…batboy for the St Louis Cardinals, greenhouse worker growing succulents in L.A., shepherding goats and cows in Nepal, Asian correspondent for Lonely Planet, olive farmer outside Cadaques, Spain…currently it’s dog walker in Brooklyn. I know…I dream big!

At Octoberfest in September in St Louis and two guys walked by with their arms around each other wearing black shirts one saying ‘Yin’ and the other ‘Yang’. And I thought that’s what it’s all about and we’re gonna be all right. Friends, we are the majority.
