Its such a good game, I could only rent it as a kid so I never finished it, but got it eventually on DS and finally did with the 3d remake. They took huge swings with this one that really paid off over and above the previous 3.

The first one is Ragnar, soldier, tasked with figuring out why kids are being kidnapped. A solid intro to all the new stuff in the game, and a decent no-nonsense character. Ragnar will be solo except for a single healing slime you can recruit, and his story is very straightforward.

IV doesn't start with the hero. Instead you go through several chapters where you meet a character, go through their 'origin' and complete a specific goal for them, and then go to the next character. Each of these are self contained stories with a 'hook' at the end that lets them all connect up.

Three lets you pick your party, added a few more mechanics, but has a lot of the McGuffins be part of mini-stories along the way. You get the boat, start collecting orbs, get all the orbs, get bird, take bird to boss, kick boss ass, find out about bigger boss, collect mcguffins, kick his ass.

The first one is entirely that, the only thing keeping you from bee-lining the final boss is a few key items, levels, and gear. You don't even have to rescue the princess. The second one adds two party members and a boat and a few more McGuffins to collect in various stages, but same deal.

You can tell they realized 'save at the king' was going to limit them a lot from now on, because now you just save at churches/houses of healing. Saves you steps as well, cuz when you die then you get kicked back to the guy to revive your party anyway.

Fuck yeah, about fucked it up cuz I forgot to do the parry-cancel glitch the same turn he decided to attack a sage and one shotted them, but managed to recover and keep it going.

I know its corny, but I love scenes where two characters clash with not only their strength, but literally clashing their ideals against each other.
