If you think gas power is cheap, meet Keadby 2, the last CCGT gas plant built in Great Britain

It opened in 2023, after 5yrs of development, at a cost of £350m

Owner SSE says it would now cost 3.5x to build the same plant (~£1.2bn)

Trump is unhinged malignant narcissist, his correspondence with Norwegian Prime Minister makes this clear.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cx...

The path he's taking will take down the US economy and standing in the world in 2026. We can only hope that he'll be removed from office ASAP.
Trump's texts with Norway's PM linking Nobel Peace Prize to Greenland demands released in full
Trump says he will impose 10% tariffs on the UK and other countries that oppose his plan to take over Greenland - rising to 25% later in the year.

I've been an open source project lead for 25 years and never expected to have to start a discussion about how to navigate a possible breakdown of US and European relations and trade, but alarming stuff is happening that could have a profound impact on how we work:

Brutal treatment of journalists is yet another example of the descent into fascism in the US.

US Congress needs to act.
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

European EV buyers used to love Tesla's but since Elon Musks swing to the far right and attempts to manipulate European politics to do the same, sales have dropped massively.

Falling sales while the rest of the EV market is booming is not down to lack of competitive cars, it's Elon's conduct.

The speed of the rollout of renewables in China is at such an unprecedented pace that it's sometimes difficult to take in the numbers.

So, instead, here's a wonderful photo essay, capturing the scale, majesty, and yes - beauty - of the energy transition in action 😍

Really encouraging news from China and India, with coal power dropping. This is a win for air pollution and starting to slow the rise in CO2.

If it weren't for the exponential rise in Renewables in both countries we could just label this a blip, with them it's looking more like a turning point.

Best use of hydrogen? Explosive demos of how bad an idea it is to have in our homes!

I'm really glad we're replaced our gas hob with induction hob and heating/hot water gas combi boiler with a heat-pump.

Cheaper to run but crucially no toxic emissions and no leak and associated combustion risk.

400W/kg and 5 minute charging for solid battery, well at least that's the claim from Donut Lab's promo video:

Independent testing will be when we find out whether it's hype and hot air or genuinely game changing.

@smmt-ukauto.bsky.social have published there UK new car registrations for December 2025. Again the BEV market share peaked above the 30% market share line.

Growth through 2025 stayed pretty close to the Later S-Curve, suggesting a 50% market share mid 2027.

In the latest carbon budget, we revised...
* up land-use change emissions
* up the ocean sink (now takes up 29% of total emissions)
* down the land sink (now takes up 21% of total emissions)
* the "budget imbalance" now has zero trend

What does this mean?

Happy New Year Folks :-)

2025 was our first full year as a de-carbonized household so we are now able to review all the monetary and carbon costs of having heat-pump, household battery, solar and an fully electric car.

Our running and carbon costs are now 63% & 93% lower than before transitioning!
