This platform is so weird and I don't know how to use it, so I'm just going to start archiving the games I've beaten this year with a blurb or two of my thoughts.

(I'm not used to reviewing games in less than 300 characters, so this will be an experiment if nothing else 🤷‍♂️)

Dust off a DVD copy of The King's Speech and tell me it's a better film than The Social Network or the remake of True Grit. Academy says it is and they wrong.

Eh, TGA are like the Oscars in the sense that being nominated (or snubbed) for Game of the Year should be the more important thing in the eyes of audiences. Win or lose, SO MANY eyes are now on your game.

...but Count Chocula didn't make it...

I didn't know they were ceramic! Looks like Franken and Boo are chilling with the good china until a new Count gets here.

The classy, ceramic, apparently quite fragile Franken Berry and Boo Berry cereal bowls, along with the cracked remnants of the arrived-shattered Count Chocula bowl.

Ironic that the one monster who famously crossed the sea in his source material is also the one who didn't survive a trip overseas.

Castlevania is still the coolest idea anyone ever came up with. big ol house party for monsters and Dracula is the host, a simple overarching plotline that connects all the games together that's easy to understand, and a sub weapon gameplay mechanic that got better and better over time

One of the most soul-ascending moments I've seen in any film was in John Wick 3, a dog gets shot by some dudes, Wick and his dog immediately kill all of them, and then it's immediately revealed that the first dog was rocking a secret bulletproof vest and was perfectly fine.

9. Drill Dozer
☆☆☆☆

I've beaten it before, but this is my first time replaying it WITH the secret challenge levels.

This game is one of the great puzzle platformers on the GBA. Super fun time. I mourn the timeline where GameFreak tweaked the clunky controls for a DS sequel and Jill got into Smash.

Drill Dozer screenshot. I think Jill's design is phenomenal, her petite stature and pink hair loops complimented perfectly by the clunky, round, mechanical Dozer. She's a little goblin thief with a heart of gold, so her ultra-cute character design doesn't feel complete WITHOUT her mecha. It's great, she LOOKS like an iconic puzzle platforming icon.

The music goes HARD. The only complaint I could see people having would be how ear-grating the Dozer's sound effects are. Considering how the drill is the key to every single puzzle in the game, you're going to be hearing it a lot.

The story is silly to the point of unimportance, but the core cast of characters making up Jill's little squad is really fun regardless. Very "Early-2000s Cartoon Network" vibes that work surprisingly well.

Again, the only big complaint I have about the game overall is how jank some of the controls can be. We're talking about the GBA here (I played on original hardware) and those buttons can be FINNICKY. Considering some of these puzzles require precise actions done under strict time limits, the unresponsive controls can get infuriating at times.

In particular, there's a level that involves "flying" and HOO BOY that was hell to get through.

Overall though, I truly believe that THIS is the time of fun, arcade-y game that Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori dreamed of making back when they first founded GameFreak all those years ago. I wish they had the opportunity to revisit Jill and the Red Dozer Gang, but I'm still very happy with the little gem they did give us.

1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

This might be a contender for my favorite damn game of all time.

The hype is dead now, sure, but the game's "EVERYONE IS HERE" thesis felt like a historical celebration, a reward for those who stuck through, and a strangely emotional finale all rolled into one.
