#ebikes are serious urban #transportation .

I wish everyone who usually takes a car for their short trips could try an #ebike for a week or even a day. Minds will be blown, second cars will be sold off, health club memberships cancelled, and JOY in daily life renewed. #cities

The “E-Bike Effect:” Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%.

E-bikes support fewer car trips.

The dreaded b word. “Balance” just means tweaking the status quo, mostly to preserve it. What is needed is a reapportionment of street space to deliver the outcomes that makes cities function. That doesn’t come with balance. That comes with choices.

It looks like it's not just the bus lane in Cap Hill, SDOT's stated goal for Columbia City is to "balance" the needs of non-resident drivers over the needs of residents, transit riders, walkers, and bikers.
While SDOT works to improve connectivity, access, and safety for people walking, rolling, and biking, we also recognize that business districts like Columbia City are destinations that draw people from all over the region who may not be able to access these areas other than by car. Our goal with the proposed changes is to balance these needs by organizing and improving on-street parking, while also investing in and improving other modes of transportation to make them more desirable than driving. Secondly, our goal is to improve goods delivery and loading by adding dedicated load zones where they are needed, which reduces emission and improves safety.

In cities, street space is a really scarce (and under-valued) commodity. Increasing vehicle size costs everyone.

And vehicle weight determines your impact on the wear-and-tear of cities.

So this kind of public policy is really just common sense.

On Sunday, #Zürich residents voted 52.8% in favor of increasing parking fees for cars according to weight.

The owner of a BMW X2 (Diesel), which weighs 1,675 kilograms, will now pay equivalent of €717 Euros per year to park on a public street. (Before, about €321.)

Direct democracy!
