It’s #NationalSnowdropDay! Snowdrops, also known by the botanical name Galanthus, are one of the first plants to flower in the new year.

‘Drifts’ of snowdrops make for spectacular photos. Like this display at The Weir Garden, Herefordshire.
A bank covered in small whit snowdrops. The sky is blue with fluffy white clouds. Although bright the image gives a slightly cold, wintry feel. A bank that leads down to a river which is fenced off. Across the bank are hundreds of white snowdrop flowers. It is a slightly overcast day A pathway with snowdrops on either side. They are blooming beautifully creating a snow-like covering across the grass.

Wildlife group returned to the English/Welsh border on Weds to the location of our Land Caddis (Enoicyla pusilla) discovery last Nov. Found in v. good numbers again & over a wider area. Grown too: cases now around 3.5mm long (prob 3rd instar of 5). Excellent result!
A Land Caddis larva. Britain's only terrestrial caddisfly. The larva constructs a tubular case from particles of soil & vegetation which it lives within, sticking its head & legs out of the wide end to move around. This one is about 3.5mm long, with the head & legs visible bottom left. Three Land Caddis cases (the larvae are inside them but have pulled themselves in like tortoises retreating into their shells) on someone's hand. Habitat shot. A clearing in mixed coniferous & broadleaved woodland. There is some snow on the ground.

Found this morning in Brede High Woods (in horrible weather). Some kind of Mite. Am thinking it is probably one of the Uropodidae, a mesostigmatic mite.

Looking down on an orange-brown oval creature. It has a translucent shell through which are visible some paler orange-brown pits. Looking on the underside of the same orange-brown creature. There are four pairs of legs arranged such that the head end of the creature is to the lower right of picture.

A basking Gorse Shieldbug, my first shieldbug of the year, seen during Wednesday's one day sunny spell. Back to relentless gloom again since!
A mainly green shieldbug, head uppermost, partly obscured by the spiky green plant in which it is sitting. Large areas of its wing-cases have a reddish hue, with a bluish strip on their outside edges. The yellow abdomen is mostly hidden by the wings but it edge is just visible outside the blue areas.
