A very round, orange, crustose lichen is growing flat on light coloured rock. The centre is filled with small round, orange discs…the apothecia.

Fresh but invigorating on the North Devon coast this morning.

The garden weather station is reporting 10C outside but there’s a stiff easterly wind making it feel considerably cooler.
The dawn sky was very colourful.
A high bank of heavy grey-purple cloud over a break just above the horizon, lit up orange just ahead of the dawn. At the bottom edge of the frame is a silhouette of rooftops and winter-bare trees.

We have a forecast for hazy skies and breezier conditions later. I think this cloud, arriving from the west, would support that.

In the last few days, at 03.30, somewhere close to my bedroom window, a robin has decided to ditch his melancholy autumn lament and break into his spring serenade. As we’re still 16 days from the winter solstice, he clearly understands the benefits of being an ‘early bird’.

We were so lucky with the weather for our trip to RHS Rosemoor Glow last night - unexpectedly mild, dry and calm.
Some lovely colours beautifully accentuating the fine and statuesque trees.

Lovely and fresh on the North Devon coast today but also rather chilly.
