phew! lesson of the day: take the easy win and move on... no matter how "under-climatic" it feels. that hard dunk might be tempting but it's not worth the risk of an upset at the very last second! 🏀
fortunately, the USSR then played the summit card which worked out in my favor! 💪🏾
i was actually lucky to have escaped with a draw on that scoring! my 19 VP lead could have reduced if i hadn't been so strong in that region before all my influence in two battleground countries (iraq and saudi arabia) was removed 😱
i thought i had my super satisfying win in the bag... but then it got neutralized out of the blue when the USSR headlined muslim revolution! 🤯
middle east scoring had no chance of a nasty defcon surprise and more importantly, i could score 23 VP instead of just 20 VP with camp david accords or even 22 VP with duck & cover (if it somehow didn't get sabotaged). it was perfect... this was the hard dunk I was looking for 😌
camp david accords could have given me the one VP i needed without any possibility of defcon drama but it didn't really feel satisfying enough for the climax that i felt i deserved after all the times that this USSR bot had beaten me on this handicap level 🤔
duck & cover felt too risky to headline. The USSR (which always has the initiative) could play a headline card that reduced the defcon level to 2 before my duck & cover got activated, resulting in a defcon own goal for me. this has happened to me before, would've crushed me ☢️
i entered turn 7 with 19 victory points (VP) and three possible ways to secure that one missing VP in the headline phase and seal the win:
1. camp david accords (1 VP)
2. duck and cover (3 VP)
3. middle east scoring (4 VP)
so i was feeling quite cocky 😏

Very dramatic end! Thought I had it in the bag with my Middle East Scoring but it got neutralized by Muslim Revolution! 🤯

this is unironically what it feels like to run a startup

this is the most deliciously difficult solitaire wargame i have played so far and the best part is that i have barely scratched its surface 🎲

funny thing is that as soon as i got into the sequence of play, i realized that i had absolutely bungled my setup 🤣
i haven't even started turn 1 but just figuring out how to distribute all my 23 units in the game setup has me so exhausted and excited at the same time that i need to take a break!

I've met @icurtiss.bsky.social at Connections UK last year, where we talked about wargaming as a modelling method, risk gaming and his scenarios for Lux Capital. A couple of weeks ago, we sat down online to talk about these topics, students' games, and other war/riskgaming matters. Enjoy!
