The Greenland scheme is a very clever strategy by US planners. Either the Europeans and Canada militarize the Arctic region and project interdiction capability into Russian shipping lanes, or the US does it unilaterally. Stoking nationalist revanchism within Europe & Canada is a win-win for the US.

The intended result, which was always the increased militarization of the Arctic to attack Russian and Chinese shipping lanes, has been obvious to anyone bothering to see Trump's "threats" for what they actually were. A set of orders, that have been dutifully followed by Canada and Europe.
