A live streamed genocide wasn't enough to resign over. A pipeline, that probably won't even be built, was.
This afternoon, I informed the Prime Minister of my decision to resign as Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, Minister responsible for Official Languages, Minister of Nature and Parks Canada, as well as his Lieutenant in Quebec.

You can find my full statement below.

It is not enough to set tasks; we must also solve the problem of the methods for carrying them out. If our task is to cross a river, we cannot cross it without a bridge or a boat. Unless the bridge or boat problem is solved, it is idle to speak of crossing the river.

In thinking about the concept of compulsory military service in Canada, it occurs that the country does not actually have a cohesive national army so much as a mercenary army. Sure, some enlist out of patriotic feeling. But attaining financial security is also a big (maybe bigger) factor.
Even if you advocate for militarism (which I do not), you must acknowledge the reality that citizens will not serve a state that does not serve them. Mandating compulsory service into the military or civilian corps of a state that lets children go hungry is a fool's errand.
