I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

FULL STORY HERE: Emails began flooding CDC inboxes late Friday night announcing dozens of layoffs. HR people brought back from furlough to oversee the RIFs. Disease detectives, entire Washington office, global health, injury prevention, MMWR staff among those hit.

here’s some writing from the other day, since I haven’t shared much of this kind of thing in a bit;

You were born to be aware that your body is a weapon. Your body is a weapon, one that's used against you. Your mother told you, "Don't let them get too close to it. Don't even let them see it."

You were born and you've stayed alive, and the people that get close to you - the ones looking at you, not using your body — they look you in the eyes and stop themselves from blinking. They say, "Boy, show me your teeth." They hold onto your neck with both hands. There's pressure but it's not enough to stop you from breathing.
"Show me your teeth. Show me that you can bite."

A man tries to reach between your legs, and you bite him. It breaks the skin. He calls you a whore, kicks you while you're on the ground, brands you as a slut and a bitch. It burns, the words seared onto your thighs.
A boy your age wants to touch you, and he'll touch you anywhere you tell him to. He doesn't ask about the letters rising from your flesh that he can feel with his finger tips - he's tracing braille that's describing something more than what was intended. He whispers in your ear, "They can't kill you." You almost believe it. He says, "They'll try to kill you. They'll try, and they can't kill you." You'd let him try, and you almost ask him to.
That boy stays close to you longer than you expected, long enough for the bad days to come around. You're feeling like asking him for death again, and this time, you get the words out. He lets you slap him across the face after he said no. He lets you hit him, holding his own hands back. You tell him, "I need your hands where I can see them."
He's still keeping them where you can't, and you keep hitting him. You want him to put his hands up, to hold yours, to keep them from hurting him. He takes it instead.
"They can't kill you. They won't kill you.
Show me your teeth."

And the editors they hire for doing that work? A lot of companies will insist they provide workers with good pay and benefits, yet turn around and hire people as “freelancers” instead. You know, the people working 9 to 5 every week day. totally just freelancers. won’t b getting insurance for that!

so much of what we read online is already completely AI, and if it’s not, the person who used it will resort to finally writing their own pieces but their writing is dogshit. They don’t care about hiring good writers, they want fast content and the editors to clean it up for them if caught

what’s really funny abt knowing editors is finding out that their companies — that insist on no AI or plagiarism — they will still use that AI written “content” even if firing the person trying to have it pass as their own, but they will still have it slightly edited and released. lmfao

THE STRUCTURE OF TORTURE
The Conversion of Real Pain into the Fiction of Power

NOWHERE is the sadistic potential of a language built on agency so visible
as in torture. While torture contains language, specific human words and
sounds, it is itself a language, an objectification, an acting out. Real pain,
agonizing pain, is inflicted on a person; but torture, which contains specific acts
of inflicting pain, is also itself a demonstration and magnification of the felt-
experience of pain. In the very processes it uses to produce pain within the body
of the prisoner, it bestows visibility on the structure and enormity of what is
usually private and incommunicable, contained within the boundaries of the
sufferer's body. It then goes on to deny, to falsify, the reality of the very thing
it has itself objectified by a perceptual shift which converts the vision of suffering
into the wholly illusory but, to the torturers and the regime they represent, wholly
convincing spectacle of power. The physical pain is so incontestably real that it
seems to confer its quality of "incontestable reality" on that power that has
brought it into being. It is, of course, precisely because the reality of that power
is so highly contestable, the regime so unstable, that torture is being used.

What assists the conversion of absolute pain into the fiction of absolute power is an obsessive, self-conscious display of agency. On the simplest level, the agent displayed is the weapon. Testimony given by torture victims from many different countries almost inevitably includes descriptions of being made to stare at the weapon with which they were about to be hurt: prisoners of the Greek Junta (1967-71), for example, were made to contemplate a wall arrangement of whips, canes, clubs, and rods, were made to examine the size of the torturer's fist ( character limit hit, but it continues )

Seeing videos of protesters thrown onto pavement while cops are pulling their arms behind their backs, the spectacle they’re making out of civilians who threaten them. Pain is a mock execution and forcing on restraints is ritualistic public humiliation. We have normalized all of it.

Like. Obviously, the control they have when using cuffs / shackles on people is already deranged. But we are desensitized and lacking language in explaining why it shouldn’t be that way. Engaging with power dynamics in kink spaces really emphasizes + sheds light on those questions

the fascination with kinks of restraining another person always has such an effect on seeing that power used by the state. You spend so much time learning about consent, trust, the power someone is giving you when you restrain them. Seeing it flipped on its head by pigs gives a special kind of anger
