“AI firms want to woo us with frictionless interfaces for everything. The antidote is sitting across the table from the people we care about, and all the friction they come with, to discuss our interesting times & everything else.” Indeed! Happy Thanksgiving all! www.fastcompany.com/91447431/tha...
Face it, AI will come up at Thanksgiving dinner
It’s not common ground, but it’s a near-all-encompassing cultural touchpoint.

States of precarity in UK Higher Education Geography – report
I am late to highlighting the publication of the important RGS-IBG report States of precarity in UK Higher Education geography. I encourage anyone in academia but especially those of us in geography as a discipline to read and think about this work. There is a summary at the RGS-IBG website (a snippet of this is copied below), where there are also links to the report, plans, posters and other resources.

Yes, this is correct. And the reason is because our capitalist classes have decided that it is not sufficiently profitable, so they're not going to do it.

We must understand this reality. Capital *cannot* be relied upon to address the climate crisis.

Surging electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence is putting humanity’s climate goals out of reach, extending the life of fossil fuels and driving up emissions in the U.S. power sector.
AI Is Pushing Climate Goals Out of Reach, New Reports Say - Inside Climate News
Without a big increase in investment in renewable energy globally, humanity will not limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius, but much of the data center boom is powered by fossil fuels.

Career Development Research Fellowships -Oxford
Gillian Rose recently shared these Career Development Research Fellowships on BlueSky and I thought I would share them here too. One of the specialisms encouraged in Human Geography. Career Development Research Fellowships for full-time research offered by St John’s College to early career researchers who have recently completed or are close to completion of a doctorate (and will have submitted their thesis no later than three months before their start date of this post), or who have recently been awarded a doctorate. They provide an unrivalled opportunity to establish a research profile as a member of a collegiate community. More details here.
