I'm very honoured to be shortlisted for the Lane Anderson Award for science writing! My book, Signs of Life, looks at the increasingly elaborate and expensive things we're doing in Canada to try to save endangered species, and how we can turn things around (yes, there is hope for #biodiversity).

For 64 days, ICE has held Spanish-language reporter Mario Guevara, arrested while live-streaming a "No Kings" protest against the Trump administration's actions. There are no charges against Guevara and he was in the country legally at the time of his arrest. www.linkedin.com/pulse/cpj-fi...

Canada Council and other arts councils give grants to authors to write books and to publishers to publish books. But more and more books they support can’t get reviewed. What's the solution? Could the Canada Council help fund book review sections? #writing #Canada #books

Some publications ask publishers to buy ad space before they will review a book. A bigger ad gets you more book review space. That’s a huge disadvantage for smaller, independent Canadian publishers. #writing #Canada #books

Without reviews, people don't know a book exists. If they don’t know a book exists, they don’t buy it or talk about it on social media. Book review space has greatly shrunk or disappeared entirely across Canada in recent years. #writing #Canada #books

It’s a far cry from 2018 when I published my first book and received many reviews, even as an unknown author. #writing #Canada #books

Some sobering reflections on being a Canadian author these days. My new book, Signs of Life, got 2 reviews. Yup, only 2, and it was excerpted once. All 3 publications put it on their best 2024 books/recommended reading lists. Like many authors, I couldn't get more reviews. #writing #Canada #books

I never thought I would google “Trump kissing my ass” to get caught up on world news yet here we are

Let’s just flip that around, shall we? More than 80% of Americans do not support annexation of Canada or Greenland.

A great read about critical minerals and tariffs from @zoeyunker.bsky.social

‘Metals are the new oil’: B.C. is fast tracking critical minerals projects to counter Trump’s tariffs – but there’s no guarantee the minerals will be used to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. #bcpoli VIA @zoeyunker.bsky.social thenarwhal.ca/bc-critical-...

This is not the only 'article' painting Canada and Canadian institutions in a bad light. They dovetail with Trump's continuing demonization of Canada, cultivating American support for annexation.

Let's not forget 2/3 of Postmedia is U.S.-owned. This headline feeds right into Trump's plan to annex Canada. And you betcha that would be the end of our free, universal healthcare - it would be for-profit all the way. nationalpost.com/feature/cana...
'What the hell are we doing here?' Inside Canada's shockingly violent hospitals
A surge in assaults, stabbings, shootings and machete attacks have made work a living hell for doctors and nurses at Canada's hospitals.
