A surreal sight... #SkyTrain's retired Mark I cars being torn apart and dismantled at a recycling scrapyard.

It marks the start of the end for the original fleet.

While some will be repurposed, most of the 150 cars will not. #TransLink #vanpoli #vanre

Alberta organizes banned book buyback to keep streets safe
Critics have argued that, while the buyback may get some books off the streets, serious readers could simply swap covers, file off ISBN numbers, or even 2D print books at home.

The transformation of ICE into a type of national police force, backed, in some cases, by soldiers from the National Guard, has been covered as immigration story—but these forces are reshaping democracy for all of us.

For decades, cops have been trained not to shoot at moving vehicles. Immigration agents have shot at least nine people since September.

All of them have been in cars.

WSJ investigation: In the past 6 months ICE agents have fired at vehicles 13 times, leading to:

* 8 people shot
* 5 of which were U.S. citizens
* 2 died
* no victims drew a weapon

The playbook: Agents box in a vehicle, block attempts to flee, then fire

Nothing "gilded" about that cage. Look south for 2 minutes and it's pretty obvious.
Much better is this sober assessment of where Canada is, the stakes, the risks, the costs and the payoffs: independence with a lower standard of living to pay for the economic and physical security we’ve gotten almost for free until now, or the gilded cage of vassaldom/US statehood. Gift link.
Opinion: Venezuela attack shakes Canada’s economy far beyond oil – it’s a reckoning for the ages
Any chance that Canada can ride this one out and hope for the return of a sane presidency can be ruled out

Hey quick question, is this kind of stuff happening anywhere else notable right now?
The reports of violence, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation tactics by the Iranian regime against its own people are profoundly concerning. Canada strongly condemns the killing of protesters, and urges Iran to allow for freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear of reprisal.
