Happy 50th birthday, Protect and Survive! A booklet full of bogus advice and a PIF series that was thankfully never shown (if it had, we'd have been hurtling towards a nuclear war), it still holds a special place in our hearts...

RAINBOW (1972) was originally conceived as Britain's answer to Sesame Street, and Geoffrey, George, Zippy and Bungle would eventually become household names. But the first series featured a maniacal, wide-eyed, terrifying prototype of cuddly old Bungle Bear...

What an absolute (nuclear) blast that was! If you missed it, I was on BBC Breakfast at around 8.40am talking about nuclear war - check it out on iPlayer! A huge thank you to Sally Nugent, Jon Kay, and the entire team.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF - AGING MAN (1977): An alarming, and alarmist, PIF warning of the dangers of overeating stodgy food and not exercising enough. Oh, and peer pressure. Don't succumb to peer pressure, kids!
November 24, 2025 at 2:37 PM
OINK! (1986): Brilliantly subversive kid's comic which featured strips from Charlie Brooker, Tony Husband, Frank Sidebottom, and Marc 'Lard' Riley. Caused a proper stink at the time; WH Smith eventually moved it to the top shelf!

Pink Floyd's ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL, PART 2 was 1979's Christmas number one, and still topped the charts in January, seeing in the new decade with its bleak, scary video. The teacher! The mincing machine! The hammers! Welcome to the 80s.

Gronda! Gronda! THE ADVENTURE GAME (1980) saw celebs try to escape from the planet Arg. Each episode culminated with the Vortex, a pulsating column of light which 'evaporated' the likes of Bonnie Langford and Richard Stilgoe. Don't worry, kids, they're not dead. Doogy Rev!

HORROR TOP TRUMPS (1978): Colossally gruesome sets, featuring blood, gore, and dismemberment. A playground classic. And it's like two games in one: can you name all the film and TV images homaged by the cards?

NOBODY'S HOUSE (1976): Children's comedy drama from ITV about a family who moves into a haunted antiques shop. The ghost in question is 'Nobody', a 14-year-old Victorian orphan who died of the plague in the building's basement, back when it was a workhouse. It's a comedy, honest!

RAVEN (1977): HTV's brilliant Arthurian Folk Horror eco-drama for kids starring Phil (Quadrophenia) Daniels as a troubled borstal boy who may be the reincarnation of King Arthur. Nuclear anxiety, stone circles, and New Age mysticism abound!

The bloody opening scenes from SCARF JACK (1981), a brilliant but obscure ITV drama about the Irish Rebellion of 1798, with the Brits as the villains, and airing slap bang in the middle of the Troubles. Dead kids strewn everywhere at 4.45 in the afternoon - it was a kid's show!

Thanks to countless scenes of peril in films, TV shows, books and comics, I thought quicksand would feature in my life a lot more than it did. Parker Bros. even released QUICKSAND the board game in 1989! The playing pieces cleverly came apart to replicate sinking into oblivion...

This early 70s Sesame Street animation is my very first childhood scar! Aged 3 (I think - it's also one of my earliest memories), I *really* didn't like the numbers rushing towards me, or the sounds they made. I think I thought they'd smash through the TV screen! What was your earliest telly scar?

A rich vein of Folk Horror ran all the way through WORZEL GUMMIDGE (1979). And one of its most horrific characters was Worzel's own creation: Dafthead!

Fresh meat was as precious as gold bullion back in the 70s. According, that is, to Letraset's dizzyingly exciting THE SWEENEY Super Action Transfers, which allowed kids to create violent scenes based on the classic post-watershed cop show. This meat blag is *carnage*, guv!

GRIM TALES (1989): Rik Mayall is magnificenly unhinged (of course!) as the storyteller in this glorious children's show, performing the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales like a live action Looney Tune. Written by Anne Caulfield and Anthony (Dramarama, Robin of Sherwood, Crime Traveller) Horowitz.
