That last part reminds me of a chat I had about the song with Robert Smith at a record event years ago. I remarked on how I loved that the song had so much sweetly-rendered emotion without seeming sappy. He smiled. Then I went on and on about “In Between Days” and “Boys Don’t Cry” lol
It's deceptively complex. Three different motifs / themes, all of which get to be the foremost melody at different times, all interlaced. It's a brilliant little gearwork of a song. Also succeeds at being almost ridiculously sentimental without coming across saccharine.

Was talking to my students about a genre of star-, story-, and character-driven action thrillers that came out in the 90s—Speed (‘94); The Fugitive (‘93); Breakdown (‘97); Unlawful Entry (‘92)—modest by contemporary standards, would probably be considered mid-tier nowadays
