there's a "fact" about the new Archbishop of Canterbury on her Wikipedia page that'll be an interesting test of which media organisations do their jobs...

The government has set the NHS’s budget for the next 3 years, now it needs to be realistic about its priorities - my comment piece in the BMJ:

Spending review leaves a greater need for clarity on healthcare priorities
The notion that the health service has emerged as a “winner” from the chancellor’s spending review is a bit like congratulating someone who has just won back the face value of a scratch card. It certa...

I disagree with this because I think at the margins spending on healthcare is not the best way to achieve better health outcomes.

But it's an important intervention in the debate because it starts with honesty about the fundamental drivers of healthcare spending.
The thing that drives me mad about the health spending debate is it totally *why* budgets are rising everywhere.

It's a *good thing* that health spending takes up an ever larger proportion of GDP. It's what we should *want* to spend money on!

I bang on a lot about different ways of counting hospital admissions or measuring length of stay or describing bed occupancy. But for me, the most important thing about patient flow metrics is that they shouldn't just be looked at; they should be discussed.

Ultimately, NHS spending is an investment in the health and prosperity of the nation. But Jim Mackey is right, there are no easy choices ahead for government on health spending and value must rule the day.

This and the % of healthcare resource that goes towards people with multiple long term conditions are the most likely two stats in health policy to send you down a never ending footnote wormhole…
Sarah Neville in the FT on lunch with Amanda Pritchard: "The NHS contributes between 10 and 20 per cent to people’s health, she says — a figure I find startlingly low"
This widely quoted figure is startlingly low because it's probably wrong.🧵

If the government is serious about boosting health and cutting the number of lives lost to the biggest killers, it's going to have to get tougher on the causes of illness.

New @ippr.bsky.social and Public First research shows that bolder action would be welcomed by the public 💪

Today the Health and Social Care Committee will be sitting to question the Secretary of State Wes Streeting.

These findings of course show that urgent action should be taken to fix emergency care…

But they also show that the strategy employed by NHSE and providers in recent years (“think carefully about whether you REALLY need emergency care”) is both misguided and dangerous. That needs fixing too!
🚑 Read @rachel-p.bsky.social's statement on @theguardian.com reporting that 1 in 3 people are reluctant to seek help at A&E because they think it will be overwhelmed ⬇️
