MD tells us a lot more on drugging microRNAs, cancer RNAs and many more. So many options. Also discusses Chem-CLIP to interrogate molecular recognition events in live cells. And advancement on this is ChemCLIP-Map-Seq, which allows direct identification using NGS.

Small molecules can also be used to affect #RNA lifetime, by triggering degradation. Their main target is diseases triggered by intronic RNA repeats that impair splicing. They found multiple ways to do this. For references see pic 👇🏼

Once they could identify these interactions, they developed Inforna, which mines secondary structures within target RNAs, and compares them to their database of known RNA motif–small molecule binding partners. Latest Inforna update 👇🏼

His lab is aiming to take human RNAs that cause disease, specifically:

- How to target human RNAs with small molecules/chemical proves in scalable and defined ways?

How to find these molecules, how to test for binding, how to assess how/if they are working?

We are now listening to our Keynote speaker, Matt Disney, from The Scripps Research Institute 🇺🇸, who due to unforseen circumstances could not join us in-person. Matt's presentation was generously sponsored by the UNSW RNA Institute (@unswrna.bsky.social)

Closing the session, we have Alexander Gillis from @scottbscience.bsky.social lab, talking about their latest insights on transcriptional homeostasis. Interestingly, despite triggering a Pol II accumulation in human cells, there is no increase in transcription.

Now's the turn of Sebastian Leidel, from the University of Bern 🇩🇪, discussing how m6A mediates mRNA decay. Rapidly degraded mRNAs tend to have more m6A in their CDS, a signal that's generally missed in metagene plota of m6A. Codon choice & mRNA mods tune mRNA decay rates.

After some technical issues, we are now hearing from @traudebeilharz.bsky.social, on polyadenylation across the mRNA lifecycle. The shape of the Poly(A) tail is a marker of RNA fate and can be assessed using techniques such as PATTERNseq.

We wrap up the non-coding #RNA session with Sayanthooran Saravanabavan telling us about the computational discovery of TDP-43-Responsive Circular RNA:DNA Hybrids (circR-loops) in neuronal cells, particularly in the context of ALS.

Now is the turn of @stacedw.bsky.social telling us about a #lncRNA as a therapeutic for ER+ breast cancer. Cannot share more details, but I can say seeing the promise of #lncRNAs starting to bear fruit is very exciting!

Now Yuchen Feng @sydney.edu.au, tells us about the pan-cancer #lncRNA MILIP, which interacts with and enables the repression of p53 by c-Myc in cancer cells. MILIP also binds the elongation factor eEF1alpha1, promoting protein synthesis, by enhancing tRNA type II interaction

We are now in the non-coding #RNA session at #ARNASydney2025. We heard a fascinating story on other functions of the TERRA #lncRNA, which binds ATRX and gene promoters. It also is more abundant in the aging brain. A great talk by Hsueh-Ping Chu from the National Taiwan University.

Super fun presenting some of our #MDA5 #RNA sensor work to an RNA-centric audience! The different point of view from my usual infection and immunity background led to some great questions and discussions. More ideas forming!!! #ARNASydney2025 #virus 🧪🧫🦠

We had a set of amazing talks in the #RNA in immunity session at #ARNASydney2025. Presentations by Stacey Horner, @drnatsampaio.bsky.social, Elizabeth Chan and Kitty McCaffrey. From viral infections to bacterial toxins, a really great session.
