The Constitutional crisis is here.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal was recently informed of a secret ICE policy that directs agents to ignore the 4th Amendment to the Constitution and enter homes without a judicial warrant to perform civil immigration arrests.

When the gov't detains a person, they have a legal and moral obligation to provide adequate medical care. ICE is failing to do this in dramatic fashion.

31 people died in ICE custody in 2025 - more than the entire Biden Presidency. The detainee population has gone from below 40,000 to over 73,000.

The numbers are in: Elon Musk and Trump's "DOGE" was a huge failure.

At the same time the federal workforce was reduced by 317,000 people (including 2,400 in Wisconsin), federal spending actually increased from $6.95 to $7.01 Trillion, according to the Treasury Department.

It must be nice to live in the fantasy world that WI Republicans seem to inhabit. In their world, if you simply ignore systemic racism and sexism, it will just go away.

The State Senate voted to approve a bill today that would exempt most cash tips from state income tax. This is bad policy for a number of reasons.

If we really want to make life easier for people who are struggling with low wages and high costs, we should eliminate the tipped wage of $2.33/hr.

All workers deserve the right to collectively bargain over wages, benefits, and working conditions. Today, I was proud to stand with my Democratic colleagues in support of legislation that would allow nurses at UW Health do do exactly that.

We must take care of the people who take care of us.

Wisconsin's largest private school voucher program - the statewide WPCP - is primarily serving students who never attended public school. Out of 4,370 new enrollees in the 2025-26 school year, just 21.7% attended public school the year prior.

At long last, the President has revealed his "concept of a plan" for lower healthcare costs.

Instead of giving money directly to insurance companies, he wants to give an unspecified amount of money to individuals so that THEY can give it to insurance companies.

Try to contain your excitement.

The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau projects that the current biennium will have a $2.5 billion surplus - $1.5 billion more than previously projected.

This surplus should be used to buy down next year’s property taxes by boosting state support for WI public schools.

It’s a win-win!

Being an ICE or Border Patrol agent is not a particularly dangerous job, and 2025 was the 2nd safest yr on record. The chance of being killed on duty for these agents is 5.5 times lower than for the general public.

Less than 10% of the few on-duty deaths that have occurred since 2003 were murders.

Here is the future I'm fighting for:

Universal healthcare with no out of pocket costs.
Tuition-free public education from pre-K through university.
Living wages for all workers.
Robust environmental and consumer protections.
Affordable housing and utilities.
Paid family and medical leave.

If you want to know exactly who Trump and the Republicans fight for, consider this:

Trump's EPA will no longer consider the cost of human life when setting air quality regulations. Rather, they will only consider the monetary cost to industry.

WI's legislative Republicans are not serious about governing. This week, they are holding hearings in the so-called "Government Ops, Accountability, and Transparency" committee.

Meanwhile, they are holding a floor session today that won't be live streamed or broadcast on TV.

Clinics at WI hospitals Childrens & UW Health have been forced to cease providing gender-affirming care to patients 17 and under due to new regulations from the Trump Admin. The regulations threatened to cease all Medicaid and Medicare funding to hospitals that continue to provide such care.

Property tax increases are exceedingly unpopular. A big reason why they are happening is private school vouchers.

With the exception of the MKE program, the $10,877 per pupil for K-8 vouchers and the $13,371 for high school vouchers are deducted from state aid for the home district.

WI's tax code is rigged in favor of the rich, and nowhere is that more true than for manufacturers.

Manufacturers filing as corporations can pay an effective tax rate of just 0.4%, while those filing as individuals can eliminate all state income tax on up to $6.9 million of otherwise taxable income

2025's Top Story: Fascism comes to America

“When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled ‘made in Germany’; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, ‘Americanism.’" - Prof. Halford Luccock, 1938

Universal healthcare is pro-business.

U.S. employers spend nearly $27,000 per employee per year for their portion of a family health plan. Under a single-payer universal system, they could use that money to reinvest in their business, including worker salaries.

If a bill drops and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

After dragging their feet on legislation for most of this session, Republicans are in a mad dash to have committee hearings on a host of bills in the legislature this week. Just today there are 10 standing committee hearings.

The 10 stories that defined 2025, Day 9: Trump's war on immigrants

2025 saw the ramping up of Stephen Miller's mass deportation scheme. Rather than targeting the small % of unauthorized immigrants who have committed crimes, 75% of those detained by ICE in Dec 2025 had no criminal convictions.

Donald Trump's armed thugs murdered a woman in Minneapolis today and are lying about it to try and score political points. This is just the latest example of an administration that is blackout drunk on unchecked power.

Healthcare is too damn expensive, and Wisconsin has some of the highest costs in the entire nation. Today, 4 bills received a public hearing in the State Senate that address one piece of the puzzle: price transparency.

The Trump Admin says it is freezing $10 billion in federal funding meant for poor families in 5 Dem-leaning states. They're using investigations into childcare fraud in one state (MN) to justify cutting off aid for 100s of thousands of kids in CA, CO, IL, MN, & NY - without presenting any evidence.
