We knew this 50 years ago and it's just as true today. Computers are a million times more powerful and 0% more accountable for the bad decisions of their operators.

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

Amnesty International, interviewing migrant detainees, identifies use of the confinement box. There can be no denying it is a torture prison

Me: Why would I write agglomerative clustering? There's plenty of packages out there.

Advent of Code: The elves need agglomerative clustering to plug in their lights.

Me: Of course, here you go. A nice little hand rolled solution is the least I could do.

Cory Doctorow, fantastic as always.

Gets at the heart of the distinction between the "AI bubble" and the useful things it will leave behind (as with the last "AI Winter"/"dot-com bubble"), the inalienable role of humans in art (despite new tools), and more.

I think people underestimate how much of our modern dystopia is caused by advertising.

- Competes for attention and resources on the basis of identity and aesthetics.

- Makes population-level surveillance and profiling profitable.

- Misaligns incentives for search engines.

The list goes on...

Useful numbers for understanding the environmental impact of AI.

Yes, the planet is burning, and we need immediate changes. That said, cutting AI usage to 0 doesn't put a dent in the problem.

Cocomelon has used more power than OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic combined.

We need bigger changes.
Using ChatGPT is not bad for the environment - a cheat sheet
The numbers clearly show this is a pointless distraction for the climate movement

Department of Defense Law of War Manual, Sec. 18.3.2.1 states the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders.

What’s its key example? Wait for it . . . It’s "orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

The OU paper is quite something.

On one hand, it did show that the student did read the source and react to it, as per the syllabus.

On the other hand, "God should smite the demonic grad student I hate" is a *wild* bad faith paper to submit that should auto-fail at least a whole course.

How many companies out there are really being limited by the ability to churn out boilerplate or code that isn't (yet) understood in depth?

I'm fairly pro-LLMs-as-a-tool, and I can't imagine how firing a large number of devs working in brownfield projects is going to help the bottom line.

The average person throughout all of history (~100B) has watched ~2 Cocomelon videos (~200B views).

Merchant, 14th century: "This is called a Mango, and it comes from the faraway land of India. It's a once in a lifetime treat that has traveled thousands of miles."

Me, most days: "Hm, walking past the pantry again, guess that means it's dried mango time again! Gonna have to go to Costco soon."

The government's treatment of Abrego Garcia has been, and continues to be, deplorable.
BREAKING:

Sorry to interrupt the football, but Kilmar Abrego Garcia has filed additional information claiming the feds misrepresented Costa Rica's position on accepting Abrego Garcia.

DOGE has to be one of the worst programs the US created in half a century.

- Saved ~no money.
- Burned goodwill/soft power around the world.
- Enriched the richest and worst among us.
- Contributed to the deaths of hundreds of thousands, possibly millions if funding isn't restored.
- Awful name.

On the one hand, Universes Beyond seems to be causing serious second-order problems for Magic it feels like the recent sets are suffering as a result.

On the other hand, I would spend an unreasonable amount of money on a JoJo set, so I am the problem. Give me "Joseph, Hamon Master" yesterday.

Say what you will about Clay Higgins...

...like, "Wow, that guy is really pro child sex trafficking" and "You need to be such a piece of shit to enshrine your name in history as the last Epstein defender in Congress".

It's fun, and he deserves it!

I don't want the expensive human-shaped robot, but it is interesting how quickly some of the "I don't want the robots to do anything creativity-adjacent; I want them to do my laundry" people are deciding that it's very important that humans do the laundry.
