I’m here to learn. I read people smarter than me. And I post photos from my walks, in the woods, in the mountains, along the sea.

HAL! Let me in!

I’m sorry, Dave. I can’t do that.
email I received from a vendor at work the other day.
Marketing email received today: “AI isn’t optional anymore”

We heard you when you said you don’t want AI. Well, tough. You’re getting it anyways.
I haven’t see one. But I recently saw another headline about a couple of thousand people who have disappeared after being arrested in Chicago.
The cat on the left is particularly bothered by the cold, and dreams of those warmer days of his youth in the deserts of the American Southwest.
A sure sign of Fall and cooler temperatures, is the cats’ willingness to nustle up together.
Protesting ICE is patriotism. It is not criminal.
I have been charged in a federal indictment sought by the Department of Justice.

This political prosecution is an attack on all of our First Amendment rights. I’m not backing down, and we’re going to win.
This is what happens when you just watch the movies, and fast forward the hobbit scenes, or any scene with dialogue, to watch just the exciting fight scenes.
I sometimes think about Otto, and how he foreshadowed a kind of MAGA voter.
He doesn’t even understand “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”
One of those “hard men of Gondor” tried to steal the ring from Frodo, and bring it back to Gondor. Those ”hard men of Gondor” all fled the witch king in terror, while Eowyn and Merry stayed to defend Theoden.
I climbed it for old times sake on a visit back east this past summer. Saw so many people on the trail with little more than a water bottle, and no extra layers. It was a clear, quiet day. But I remember it being socked in, and in the low 30s on July day on a hike years ago.
One of the trails up New Hampshire’s Mt Washington on a sunnier day.
People are absolutely using AI. And it’s led to rescues. Worse, AllTrails has started using AI. And I’ve seen articles suggesting hikes that have the feel of something churned out by AI.
I saw in another discussion where someone said Mt Washington gets 2 types of people. The inexperienced hikers. And the experienced hikers, often from the western US, who dismiss it as easy because it’s only 6,200’ high.
But there was also that time a friend wanted me to bring him up there. I gave him a list of supplies, including warm clothing, hat, gloves, and said we were turning right around if he didn’t bring everything on the list. It was the warmest, sunniest day I ever saw up there.
“It’s only 4 miles to the top. I run that everyday.”, they say as they start their hike in sneakers and sweatpants.
Star Trek DS9 did an homage to that scene. But it didn’t quite capture the same sense of paranoia.
Yeah, this is weird. This is definitely weird.
Definitely have had children of cousins call me uncle. Uncle Joe rolls off the tongue so much more easily than First Cousin Once Removed Joe. But I guess the pedants would be bothered by this.
all while also plotting an invasion of Venezuela.

This regime is causing a lot of chaos and misery. But I fail to see how this will all work out for them in the end.
All doomerism does in today’s fight is to serve Trump.
I feel like Tolkien understood this. Especially in his portrayal of Denathor. And even Theoden while he was still under the influence of Wormtongue and Saruman.
Gandalf‘s power, on the other hand, was based in his ability to stir hope.
You genuinely can’t win a war if you tolerate too much doomer behavior. Public doomerism is shockingly socially corrosive.
I'm really starting to see why countries that could, came down HARD on defeatism in WW2.
