Still the best Dune adaptation
On this day in 1984, #Dune as directed by #DavidLynch premiered in the US. It's one of my favourite films of all time.

had high hopes for Wake Up Dead Man, and they were exceeded. I feel insanely biased, though, as a lapsed Catholic who loves impeccably crafted locked-room mysteries & murder at the vicarage. imho the funniest, most poignant, and maybe prettiest Benoit Blanc entry yet.

I’ve been thinking about this piece all year: what the movies say about America and how to get our priorities back in order

Totally missed the QT discourse yesterday, but reading Cinema Speculation this year definitely made me understand his point of view and appreciation for the films of his youth. But he’s also more shallow than your average cinephile.

Zootopia 2 is a fun sequel because it is packed with a ton of cute gags and they clearly understood the first movie is a romcom.

In PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES (a much more delicious title than PLANES, TRAINS, AND CARS btw), Chicago has a thick layer of snow on the ground at Thanksgiving. One of those once-typical things that now feels like a freak occurrence, and in another 38 years it’s gonna feel like watching sci-fi.

3 years ago the Willow series premiered, a beloved TV show by both critics and audiences.

It is now lost media.

When you say “Bond tropes,” people will think of

Sexy women

Drinks

International travel

Megalomaniacal villains

Etc. But the Bond trope that really resonates, which is baked into Fleming’s novels and seeps into almost every movie?

Death.

Let’s get into it. 🧵

This kind of thing is annoying sure, but it also reveals the hellish gamble every AI evangelist is forcing us to make; Demanding we accept a hellish and worsening present in exchange for a fantastical and impossible sci-fi future.
Being anti-AI rather than anti-oligarch is one of the most shortsighted things leftists could do, ensuring they remain whiners and cumguzzlers while braver people define reality.

Ceding our science fiction future to capitalists is fucking moronic. It's the only future we have.
i think tech and ai positive people are going to be in for a big shock when anti tech and anti ai sentiment becomes a major part of leftwing politics going forward especially as datacenters continue to destroy communities and raise electricity bills

I just think technology should make people’s lives better and not at the cost of massive wealth and resource transfer to the wealthy. Gen AI and LLMs do not fill either requirement.

This, a million times over. Please tell people when you like their work. Creatives can go a very long time without any outside input at all, positive or otherwise, so a gesture of appreciation often makes all the difference in the world.
Remember your favorite creator possibly might be struggling with imposter syndrome and doubt and this timeline sucks.. so if you find yourself thinking “wow I really relate to this persons work” or that persons work gives you joy, you should probably tell them. It’s a hard time to be a creative.
