Even though I got approved for EVO, I decided not to partake in an overpriced event backed by one of the wealthiest governments in the world. At $800 a table for the past 3 years, I find it hard to justify the costs. The ambiance was stale compared to when I first went. It's just not fun anymore.

My biggest fear in all of this is that there are going to be artists and works that are "good enough" (read: mediocre) that flood the market and drag everyone's standards down to the level of accepting AI content. Including my standards! I'm not immune! Damn I need to start reading books again.

That feeling is humbling. It's personal. And improving at a craft is going through that feeling over and over. But the main point of genAI is to skip that process, no? Then how am I going to believe that AI artists know what good story and good art are?

But I think people like the commenter underestimate the work that goes into Giving a Damn when making good art. Unless you're devoid of taste, anyone who has tried a new craft has run into the "oh shit, I never thought about that" moment. I even saw that in the AI manga artists on Note.

I can totally see, and expect, art with some level of genAI assistance to be published in comics and manga in the very near future. Some of it might even be compelling to me. I don't think pain is integral to making good art (I avoided that argument in the script too).
