One of those articles where you agree with the overall message but the parts are infuriating. Bird watching is wonderful. But it’s no longer disparaged. And while they mostly love the natural world, they’re mostly liberals who don’t support movements that would really protect it in my experience.

Birders are "dealers in wonder and awe, masters of birds and ecosystems, and, despite the many stereotypes we can muster, one should never underestimate the power, joy and influence of the birdwatcher." YES! By Natalie Kyriacou. #birds #birding #nature #naturewriting
Here’s to the birdwatchers! Optimistic, slightly eccentric custodians of wonder and joy and passion and love
At its heart, birdwatching is an act of quiet rebellion, says Natalie Kyriacou. It is the gentle act of noticing – the willingness to see the world around you

When a spouse dies, the surviving partner’s need for institutional long-term care spikes—by 1.5 percentage point within 3 months, then fades by 10.

Early post-bereavement support is key to sustaining “aging-in-place.”

The question that bothers me constantly though is what is that median? There seems to be no polling of the left anywhere. Are the vocal tankies really the mainstream or is Prof Wolff? You could argue for a guess either way. But I’d love to see some data.

“You can’t really decide to paint a masterpiece. You just have to think hard, work hard, and try to make a painting that you care about. Then, if you’re lucky, your work will find an audience for whom it’s meaningful.” - Susan Kare

This applies to every single creative pursuit.

Stale take but mb good framing. Vaccines are an interesting ethical vector bc it's obviously a bodily autonomy personal choice thing but, the long tail risk is that u could literally kill someone. It exemplifies the ways in which many ethical issues are actually deeply interdependent.

"This kind of historical amnesia .. about Columbus's role in the slave trade and the way that conquest invented Blackness as a form of abjection..

Even leftist critiques .. are focused on Columbus the murderer, not Columbus the enslaver."

"The money that financed Columbus's voyage to the Americas came from a tax which Ferdinand and Isabella obtained from the church for waging a 'just and holy war' against the Moorish kingdom of Granada and Islam as a whole.

Granada surrendered on January 2, 1492. Columbus set sail in April 1492."

Loffredo spoke with the mayor of Aitaroun, who is struggling to oversee rebuilding efforts under ongoing Israeli attacks, and visited Lebanese homes that were used as Israeli military bases during last year’s ground invasion.

So weird when you see liberals say “No kings.” They’re leaving out the second part. It’s: “No kings. No Masters.”

A lot can be inferred from that omission.
