Yeah, Rush, don’t open it.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.

"Don't open it!" Cerel blurted.

Rushak hesitated, but ignored his warning. He
carefully lifted the lid, peeked inside, and then
stepped back. Without speaking he gestured to Cerel. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up, but he made himself peer inside. A pair of black globes rested side by side on a bed of white silk. They were carved out of a hard, yet porous material, in a hollow webwork of obscene designs. A pinpoint of
cold light lurked in the center of each. Cerel looked away.

Rushak whispered, reading the inscription on
the inside of the box's cover. ""The Orbs of bone shall by a whispered word awake. Their cold gaze shall quench the golden glow, to rob the King of his eternal CHARGE. So must the dying man his living land forsake.' He shivered, and in his eyes Cerel saw a
perfect reflection of his own cold dread.

“Perhaps. Or perhaps you will get nothing.”
Lilting, atonal laughter seemed to come from everywhere at once. “You vastly overestimate your skills, mageling. And somehow, despite my warnings, you vastly underestimate her hatred of you. Do you know how many times she has dreamed of the moment she would kill you?”
“I have some idea,” Fox muttered dryly. “I also have some idea who planted that idea in her mind. You are very good at what you do.”
“I haven’t done anything but help her realize the truth.”
It was lying now, which likely meant Mikiva was listening. The demon didn’t have total control yet, so it couldn’t let on that it didn’t have her best interests at heart. Wouldn’t want to spoil all its hard work.
“Of course, like all demons do.” Fox rolled her eyes.
“Your labels are hurtful and untrue. I am here to assist. Nothing more.”
“If not a demon, then what are you?”
“Let’s just say I am a… gift from the gods.” The demon laughed at some private joke.

Daemrin and Lex can both navigate technology decently since they live in outer space. However, he has an edge because his mother is an engineer and he maintains his own spaceship. Lex knows enough to keep herself safe on the Internet, but anything more technical is beyond her knowledge.

Wren has worked with low level mages with questionable credentials on occasion and reliably follows directions for charms, potions, or premade magic items. As for doing magic of her own, she has about as much arcane talent as a stump.
