The Chinese EV debate in Canada reflects the discussion re: Huawei a decade ago. Main difference now is that then we could rely on the US as a trading partner. Now both it & China are seeking to undermine our automotive industry. So while the debate is similar, the calculus has changed dramatically.
Professor Stephanie Carvin on Chinese 'spy cars': "Even if you don't have a Chinese EV, if you're using a lot of apps, your data is being collected, harvested, and could easily be purchased by China ... China doesn't need EVs to spy on us."

After last year’s gesture-gate, the masks are off. There's no more pretense. Musk is now saying the quiet part out loud: their movement is a white nationalist movement. In his myopic worldview, there’s no place for Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Native, Jewish, or anyone who doesn’t conform.

It’s funny to hear this report list all the ways Chinese data collection could be a threat when the US does the same things and poses a much greater threat given Trump’s 51st state comments. There’s only a brief acknowledgement at the end that the US isn’t trustworthy either.
Will your Chinese-made EV spy on you?

At a recent panel in Toronto, I emphasized that most urban folks are frustrated by long wait times at their local ER - but they actually have an ER that is open to them. The reality across much of rural Canada is that there simply *is not* emergency care.
Last minute closure.

Imagine showing up here with a broken arm, difficulty breathing, with a child with a high fever - and there is no help for you at your local ER.

Sylvia Jones never speaks of ER closures.

Tumbler Ridge is mourning a horrific loss. But how the shooter's identity is being talked about online, and the dangerous links being made to trans people at large, will have resounding and dangerous impacts in the months and weeks to come.

It bears repeating that so much of the far-right alternative media ecosystem built itself up through its (sensational and often inaccurate) coverage of mass shootings, namely by identifying scapegoats or running interference

Their playbook for responding to this stuff is formulaic at this point
Rebel Media's Drea Humphrey posted a "breaking" news tweet claiming to have "confirmed the identity of the mass shooter" with an accompanying photo

The tweet was deleted without explanation several minutes later

Tumbler Ridge is a small planned resource community, a winding 90 minute drive from the nearest city of at least 10,000 people.

A massive number of people are going to descend there tomorrow.

May those that arrive have respect and grace for the unimaginable grief.

This sends a chill across all new vaccines. Companies will not put billions into developing and bringing a new vaccine to market, when the world’s largest market can’t buy them
NEW: The F.D.A. refused to accept an application from Moderna for its mRNA flu vaccine.

Its reason: The agency did not think Moderna compared the new vaccine to one of the best flu shots available. The company spent $750M+ on a 41,000 person study.
