I'll always find the default collation of latin1_swedish_ci amusing. I mean, it's certainly a good collation, but very random.

We've been on like a 5+ year campaign to try and convince the boss types to let us install Linux on our laptops but, ironically, they tout "security" as the reason we can't. Meantime in the usability department...

You haven't truly lived the life of a #sysadmin until you're googling around to figure out some issue and find a post about it where someone's asking the exact same question and... it's you. You, asking the exact same question ten years ago. And nobody answers.

Huh. Just chatted in person with someone who's been on #mastodon for a while, now, who honestly thought that all the Mastodon domains were run by Mastodon. And having a different domain was, like, just a vanity thing to look cool. It only came up because they were complaining about an issue they […]

Sure would be helpful if QSFP breakout cables had staggered lengths, without that they want to form a loop (but not long enough for an actual loop) on the cables that don't have to reach as far. Stagger them by about 1U and the problem goes away. #sysadmin

Local sandwich shop is emailing out about Cyber Monday deals. Which, I think, shows a misunderstanding of what Cyber Monday actually is.

Absolutely this. For decades (literally decades!), their primary business model has been selling seriously outdated and unbelievably buggy software at outrageous prices, and then countersuing their customers when the inevitable lawsuits […]

If ever there were a "serves 'em right" scenario, this one comes decades late but it's a doozy just the same.

Maybe poor Larry will have to sell his Hawaiian island before the locals drown him by way of invitation to leave.
Looking like there’s a chance (a hope?) that Oracle will fail entirely because of a combination of prior debt and going “all in” on debt-backed LLM/AI infrastructure buildouts. At least looking like they’ll be first company to “crash” as the bubble collapses […]

Hmmm. I have done a lot of winter camping (and in snow, subzero conditions), and I'm going to say "reading an article about winter camping" is not sufficient to prepare you for actual winter camping.

I'd put this in the category of "go with people who have winter […]

We're at a precipice right now, and I'm shook. It's not that things can't get any crazier because it's impossible, it's that things can't get any crazier because load-bearing structures will fail. I just don't know what to do about the situation.

After doing Yet Another repair on one of the rather doddering cars this family owns, I've decided to start saving up to buy a new car in the next couple of years. Ouch!

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all. We had a nice dinner with family, lots of tasty food and no drunkles to be seen (or heard).

I just spent an entire freaking hour doing low-level TCP tracing to figure out why my test wasn't working, only to discover that the "Test item" dialogue doesn't freaking work with net.tcp.service checks.

It's just one thing after another with this shitty platform. Fuck #zabbix

Sincerely, one […]

lol 🤷‍♂️ because reasons.

I fucking hate this monitoring platform. #sysadm

"Dear god did some maniac get us into a reply all chain?

IT'S BEEN SO LONG."

My Volvo is old enough to buy alcohol (plus a few years), but I just got this thing in the mail from the dealer: "Mike, you're due for an important 217,500 - mile maintenance interval."
