Greetings, fellow friends of prehistoric vertebrates! Which dinosaur without “Tyrannosaurus” in its name is the best? Extra internet points if you name something still alive today!

In this difficult moment for our US federal paleo colleagues, let’s take a moment to shout out the amazing work they do to make our science possible! Share or comment below with your thank-you message and any photos of your visits. Let’s make sure they know we appreciate and support them!

We will do our best to expediently post updates with verified information helpful to our members and broader community as it is made available to us regarding impacts of the US federal government shutdown.
societyofvertpaleo.bsky.social
Please have and encourage patience with US federal offices and our federal colleagues in the coming days. With a US federal government shutdown now in effect, progress on permit requests from federal agencies will very likely be delayed.

Who is looking for grad students for next year?

I have a group of highly-motivated, aspiring scientists in paleontology, evolution, and ecology who would love some leads on programs.

Birmingham is built on the Triassic and our main logo for this year's conference features a Triassic reptile, a rhynchosaur, first described by Richard Owen in 1842 from Shropshire, just west of Birmingham.

We will be running two Triassic field trips this year, although both are now sold out

Hi there! If you could message us with who if anyone you emailed at SVP already to get this addressed, we can follow up and see what the situation is. The annual meeting as well as logistics for members and registration, are run by a separate committee than the one that runs the social accounts.

Special events reminder for the upcoming annual meeting!
#2025SVP
The Host Committee at the University of Birmingham will be organising two special evening events as part of the Annual Meeting. These events are free and currently open only to registered attendees of the meeting, but numbers are limited so we encourage you to sign up for them as soon as possible (using the link listed at the bottom of this message) to avoid disappointment.

Tuesday 11th November, 7pm, Walking with Dinosaurs – behind the scenes with the production team and Professor Steve Brusatte

The team behind the return of the iconic Walking with Dinosaurs share insights into how it was made. A panel discussion featuring the producers, paleo artists and scientific advisors from across the series who reveal the secrets of their close collaboration. Audiences watched palaeontologists make incredible discoveries, making them feel at the heart of the action, whilst the fossils became inspiration for the VFX to bring the characters to life. Members of the production unpack why the storytelling focussed to individual dinosaurs, and discuss the fine balance between showing evidence and creating drama. 26 years on from the original, the team reflect on the series’ global impact, and public service broadcasting’s bold ability to introduce a new generation to palaeontology.

This event will be chaired by Professor Susannah Maidment (Natural History Museum & University of Birmingham) and will take place at The Exchange in Birmingham city centre, a two-minute walk from the ICC. Spaces are limited to 150 places. Friday 14th November, 7pm, Authors’ panel discussion and book signing with Tom Holland, Dr. Thomas Halliday, Dr. Elsa Panciroli and Dr. Henry Gee

Popular historian and palaeontology enthusiast Tom Holland (‘The Rest is History’) will chair a panel discussion about deep time writing with palaeontologists and authors Dr. Thomas Halliday (Otherlands), Dr. Elsa Panciroli (Beasts Before Us, Earth) and Dr. Henry Gee (A (Very) Short History of Life on Earth, The Decline and Fall of the Human Empire). The event will be followed by a book signing organised by a local bookshop.

This event will take place on the campus of the University of Birmingham, a short train ride from the city centre. Spaces are limited.

There is no additional charge for registered 2025 Annual Meeting attendees to attend these events, but you must sign up if you are planning to attend.

I'm hoping for a higher than usual representation of marine reptile research 👀

An ultra-wealthy fossil enthusiast could make more impact in the progress of paleo-science through supportive philanthropy, rather than simply adding another trophy to their estate. Investment in exploration outmatches the quiet vanity of personal acquisition.

Fossils are scientific evidence, and shouldn’t be auctioned for millions to private buyers
Dinosaur fossils are sold for millions to private collectors. These fossils are scientific evidence, and need to be accessible for research and public education.
