Chapter 9: line drive

summary:

Thousands of people wore his jersey to games, but they came for The Ghost. Johnny came for him, and everyone there could see it. It stoked Ghost's possessive instincts, made him feel like burning down the world around Soap.

In the parking lot, Soap's thick arms crossed over the SAN FRANCISCO embroidered on the jersey's front, waiting.

"They let just anyone in here?"
Ghost asked instead of kissing him.
"Guess so," Soap tossed back with a wink. "You gonna bail on me this time?"

apology snippet for the delayed update on sacrifice fly!!

had to pick up some extra work so I haven’t had time to polish the last couple chapters as well as I’d want. fingers crossed ch9 should be out this week 💚⚾️

Ghost turned around, searching the stands until he found Soap. He froze for a split second, then hopped the dugout fence in one easy move and strode purposefully over to Soap, staring all the while at the SAN FRANCISCO spelled out across Soap’s chest. It scared Soap and turned him on, and he waited to find out which sensation would win.

“What are you doing here.” It was a statement, not a question, and Ghost’s expression was guarded. Wary.

Soap responded with honesty. “Watching you.”

“I’m not doing anything,” Ghost said, accusatory.

“Well, yeah,” Soap acknowledged. “But it’s your practice. I’m here to support you. Like people do.” He motioned at the random guests in attendance, then twisted halfway around to show Ghost the back of his jersey for emphasis.

GHOST 41.

Soap watched Ghost make his mental calculations.

“You’re here to watch me.” Ghost’s voice was hard. “Even though I’m not doing anything.”

“Yeah,” Soap confirmed, feeling slightly stupid.

“Wearing my jersey.”

“Yeah,” Soap repeated, and Ghost brought his eyes up to Soap’s face with a sharp, glittering intensity. It pinned Soap in place.

It’s possible this was too much, showing up when Ghost hadn’t asked him to be there and wearing his name in front of all these people. Soap knew he could play it off to the guys and the media, but maybe Ghost didn’t like it.

On the other hand, instinct told Soap that Ghost did.

it took me a hot minute to get this chapter where I wanted it to go, but we made it! a little over halfway through now 👀🔥

The summary reads:

“Is it me?” Soap’s intensity dissipated, and his soft voice filled the car with the only words that could’ve convinced Ghost to spit out the truth. “D’ye not want me to stay?”

Soap belonged on the Seals, Soap was everything good, and Ghost’s last vestiges of self-control had crumbled the second Soap had appeared in a crowded arena with eyes just for him. Ghost was leaving Johnny, but only to protect them both. Only because losing Johnny would be unsurvivable. He hoped Soap could forgive him.

“Yes,” Ghost said on a trembling exhale. “It’s you.”

Wasn’t able to watch WS live but apparently the Jonas Bros did some of a song at some point? I cannot express this urgently enough: NO. Baseball is not meant to be associated with entertainment. The beauty of baseball is its uninterrupted agony. The outside world must be barred from the stadiums.
