It's wild that everyone knows the current investment in datacenters for 'AI' is a bubble but they still keep investing in it because 'it's a gamble and if AGI is achieved it will pay off'.

I'd compare it to playing the lottery, but playing the lottery may be a better investment.

fun fact about the crushing weight of human history: the city of Ugarit was abandoned ~3000 years ago. previously to this, it was continually inhabited for >7000 years. and the people who settled it would have ALSO understood themselves as the inheritors to a history that is now totally lost to us

you joke but top level endurance athletes (think marathon runners etc) will drink what is more or less specifically formulated sugar water, and can take in up to like 100 grams of sugar per hour of running during competitions.

See, the thing is, there's a doctrinal difference between ML and MLM which allows MLs to say 'oh yeah China isn't really communist' and MLMs to say 'oh yeah the USSR wasn't really communist' but neither is actually willing to say the same thing about both, just the one they don't personally support.

It's a really straightforward calculus here- if Democrats don't want Republicans to win, they need to put forward a candidate who will earn popular support.

There's no cheat, or hack, or campaign that can get around this. They have to either put up, or shut up.

it strikes me that turning 'do you want Republicans to win' back on Newsom supporters is a pretty solid rhetorical strategy.

Like, we all know that there are a bunch of people who will absolutely refuse to vote for Newsom. I'm one of them. So if the Democrats don't want to lose, they can't run him.

This means there is a literal performance benefit to drinking more sugary gatorade over zero-calorie gatorade if you're drinking it while working out- though, obviously, this is less true if your goal is weight loss rather than performance.

One of the funniest things about sports nutrition is that a lot of athletes benefit *significantly* from specifically having sugar during their workouts- which is why sports drinks tend to be so high in sugar. Sugar, after all, is what fuels your muscles. If you're fuelling them, they can work more.

the reason for this is that I remember encountering a fanfic with like, a solid 60% of the Dumbledore/Grindelwald backstory a couple years before any of that stuff released, and while I couldn't (and still can't) recall the name I was still like 'wait... this is familiar' when I saw it in the books.
