Love OLAS but in the context of this tournament it crosses the “don’t take the piss” line IMO. ‘Going Home’ would’ve been a much better FB3 pick (and still pertinent!)

I’m thinking this ought to be right up @djperry1973.bsky.social ‘s street, if he’s playing this time. And not just because Prince Charles is from Boston

“Beat The Bush” was a pre-poll research discovery. The song seems to be a rework of an instrumental on an ‘82 LP (which I already had) - unless it was always the plan to release this later. In any event the addition of hooks, flute (Charles himself) & synth solos turns a funk banger into a monster.

It’s very good - a bit Wordy Rappinghood (the production credit came as no surprise). Unfortunately, my nom and a bracket balancer I suggested to Tom are also in this group 🤷🏻
spacediscojeff.bsky.social
Presumably this is a dodgy cash-in to coincide with the launch of the group’s officially sanctioned album reissue series. There are some obvious vinyl rips and A-side/B-side mashups. Still, I’d rather have the chance to hear the very early singles than not.

Misty In Roots, ‘From The Archives’

Comp added to digital services in September. All the non-LP singles from 1978-81, plus a dub version of “Own Them Control Them” from ‘86 and their final A-side, “Together” (‘88). Completely unofficial but good to have on streaming at last.
Screencap from Spotify of ‘From The Archives’. A monochrome group photograph of, presumably, Misty In Roots assembled in front of a curtain. Some are standing, others crouched down. All but one is wearing a hat of some kind.

I only watched The Tube twice, I think: the first ep out of curiosity and because The Jam were playing live, and one of the Frankie GTH eps a couple of years later. I was totally the target audience but the format and presenters annoyed me. There was never a unifying UK pop TV show that wasn’t ToTP.

Not sure Spotify stats are a 100% reliable metric when it comes to Japan.

Also: this was 9 hours ago in Tower Shibuya

Got to the end of the ‘84 playlist finally yesterday. For all that it includes a lot of hits, I think it’s also the most diverse (in terms of the range of genres and styles included). Well done, the nominators. And few clues here as to why US (and UK) pop nosedived off a cliff in ‘85

Apparently a Brit who liked Shalamar back in the early 80s was known as a Smooth (derogatory then, complimentary now obv)

The Randomizer making nobody happy here, I suspect. But so great to see Francis Bebey in a PPP finally (he really should have featured in the 1975 poll) and this may be his best 80s effort. Bonus vote goes to King Sunny Ade’s 📞song meets afrodub-in-space jam.

Horrific draw for my ‘82 pick, up against a Brits At It anthem and two transatlantic pop smashes. But vote anyway for Tommy Boy’s finest moment.

I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard a Fab 5 Freddy song. Blondie weren’t misrepresenting! The Soul Jazz Keith Haring comp (cf. Spotify playlist) looks super interesting too.

Might give Francky V my bonus, but he has another (better?) song coming up later.

*If I’d had infinite noms I would’ve suggested “Storm The Reality Asylum” as an alternative, or - if it were anywhere to be found online (it is not) - something from their 2nd Peel Session

Took me ages to find this post due to adult tag 🙄

I’m staying loyal to Rip Rig, who were my fave band in ‘82 along with A Certain Ratio. YMKoC is their stab at pop and I was sniffy about it at the time for that reason*. Love it now though.

Vanity 6 with a memorable addition to the 📞 Songs genre.

*Doumbia (sorry)

Gotta congratulate Bill Laswell though for the infinite hipster points racked up by “Memories” (and Whitney is good on it tbf)

Easy vote for Nahawa Dumbia here. More recognition in the PPPs for the sterling work of Awesome Tapes From Africa in digging up and preserving important recordings of this era.

A bold statement to say any reggae song “will be fine” but let’s see
spacediscojeff.bsky.social
Immense respect to whoever made that string of dub versions of The Beat tunes between 1980 and 1982. They’re all brilliant but ‘Swivel Heads’ is the culmination, completely out there and fortunately not ruined by its use in Ferris f*ckin’ Bueller
spacediscojeff.bsky.social
PPP wisdom is that Aretha fares badly when it’s not one of her best known songs. That may well hold true here too but both her songs in the tournament are damn funky.
