So NYC has banned phones in schools and this has revealed that many students can't read analog clocks. For once, I was ahead of a trend: I was terrible at reading clocks decades before it got all popular. (I can write in cursive, so am still Old.)

Recently read Enshittification and now understand better why corporations so relentlessly push us to use their apps even when the websites work fine. Money and surveillance, of course.

A student gave me this build-your-own beetles kit. Once grades are complete, it's Beetle Time.

This dragonfly was trying hard to get inside the coffee shop for some reason. I picked it up for a brief photo shoot.

History of Science. I enjoyed learning about how different people and institutions responded to significant scientific developments. This subject still interests me. Recently, I read Kimberly A. Hamlin's From Eve to Evolution: Darwin, Science, and Women's Rights in Gilded Age America.
What was your favorite early clas NOT in your eventual major. Mine was Ethnomusicology: an introduction to folk music.
I invariably get, "Ooh anthro that was my favorite class/cool professor" from people I meet. I tend to think soms of it is our outré material, being willing to talk "taboo" subjects in a cross-cultural context.

Ironically MY favorite class was probably Geology 101...

Hey, people who want to be anti-fascists, what we're not gonna do is say poor health is the consequence of evil behavior. That's ableism. That's bad. That's what fascists do. They view disability as evidence of moral character, and people who are disabled as bad because of it. Don't do that.

Asked college students to write about 3 apps that every student should use and why they are useful. One student said (among other functions) that AI could be your girlfriend or boyfriend. Not sure whether to worry or be relieved that it's only one (so far) who said this.

First hummingbird moth of the season, Shandong province, China. Unlike actual hummingbirds, these moths will feed on yellow, orange, or purple flowers.

Finished _Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present_ and recently read _The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love_, both in an effort to understand what's happening with patriarchy and authoritarianism. Both books concluded with calls to reach out to the Other Side with compassion. This is hard.

I'm reading _Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present_ and taking breaks to watch "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." Adult coping. That's the ticket.

Watched the original Blade Runner last night. Neurodivergent AF. The characters who showed the most empathy IRL were the ones who failed the empathy test set by those in charge.

I recently read _Starter Villain_ by @scalzi.com . In addition to the fun cat aspects and hilarious mockery of evil tech bros, I liked how the main male and female characters interacted professionally and later as friends without it turning into a romance.
